The Maw of the Abyss chest is one of the most rewarding finds in Mistfall Hunter, and also one of the most punishing to chase. You need a specific key, the chest sits deep inside a four-level zone where the Gyldenmist never stops closing in, and a Corrupted Heavy Knight Elite is standing right in front of it. Get everything right and you walk out with Holy-grade gear worth well over 4500 Gyldenblod. Get it wrong and you lose the key, the loot, and your raid.
Where to find the Maw of the Abyss key
The Maw of the Abyss Key is a global loot item, meaning it can appear in both Hallowgrove and Brandrgarde. That said, four specific spots have noticeably better drop rates than the general world loot pool.

Verdant Grounds Moot Hall is the first stop worth your time. This is the building on the northern side of the Verdant Grounds POI. The Elite Berserker Boss inside can drop the key directly on death, and the chests and containers scattered through the hall have a solid chance to produce one as well. Kill the boss, loot everything in the building, and move on.
The second Hallowgrove option is the area around Supreme Hall in the north-west. Scattered near the stairs and barricade gates are a number of Crucified Effigies that look like scarecrows. These are safe to approach since they are not corrupted by the Gyldenmist and will not attack you. Loot every single one for a chance at the key.
Brandrgarde farming spots
The Drill Yard POI in Brandrgarde holds the third farming location. Wooden chests scattered across the scaffolds throughout this zone have a high key drop rate. On the ground level below, reachable via Updrafts, an Elite Corrupted Mage can also drop the key when killed.
The fourth spot is the Outpost above the Sealed Grounds. The lootable containers here carry better-than-average key drop rates, and this effect is even more pronounced in Cataclysm Mode if you are comfortable with the extra pressure.
Can you buy the key instead?
Yes. The Auction House sells Maw of the Abyss Keys when other players list them. Before purchasing, check the key's quality and durability since keys have a limited number of uses. A cheap listing with one use remaining is only worth it if you are heading straight to the chest immediately after buying.
Where is the Maw of the Abyss chest in Mistfall Hunter?
The chest is in Brandrgarde, which already makes this harder than most key chests. Brandrgarde has four vertical levels and the Gyldenmist pressure is constant, so getting your bearings quickly matters.
Drop into the map and head for the deepest level, located between the Ancient Array and the Cobalt Grove. Players who spawn near the Fungholm Spawn Point are already close. Follow the path from there and descend through the crevice in the terrain. You can drop down using Updrafts or, if you are playing Sorcerer, the Phantom Step Spell works cleanly here.
Once you reach the bottom, look for a Corrupted Heavy Knight Elite guarding a narrow passageway below the Updraft points. The chest is tucked between rocks just past that enemy. You cannot reach the chest without dealing with the Knight first.

What loot can you get from the Maw of the Abyss chest?
The chest pulls from Excellent, Epic, and Superior quality tiers for general items and materials. Rings, Amulets, and Weapons appear regularly. The real targets, though, are the Holy grade items that can drop here.
Holy grade materials are the reason players bother with this chest at all. Most of them are valued above 4500 Gyldenblod, which creates an immediate problem: Pip's Special Pouch from the Secret Shop cannot protect items at that value. If you pull a Holy drop, it is unprotected and you need to extract before anyone else takes it from you.
How to extract safely after opening the chest
Two extraction methods are available from the Maw of the Abyss area. The fastest option is hunting Returner Woodlings and taking their Soul of Return bell. Alternatively, find a Soul Tree for a safe extraction point.
The closest Soul Tree spawns are two POIs east of the chest's location. One is in the Mine Pit and another is in the Drill Yard, which is the same zone where you may have farmed your key. Plan your exit route before you open the chest, not after.
