AC Black Flag Resynced: Where to Find Every Dark Animus Quest

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced replaces the original modern-day story with a brand-new Dark Animus questline. Here's where all four quests are hiding.

Black Flag: The original RPG Assassin's Creed | TheOnesWhoCameBefore

One of the biggest changes in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced compared to the original game is the modern-day storyline. Ubisoft Barcelona scrapped the old office-based sequences entirely and replaced them with a brand-new questline called the Dark Animus. Four quests, spread across the Caribbean, each gated behind specific story progress.

Here's the thing: these quests don't appear on your map unless you physically sail close to or walk up to their locations. Miss the proximity trigger and you'll finish the game wondering what the Dark Animus even was. That's the catch that's tripping up a lot of players right now.

The quests unlock in sequence, not all at once

All four Dark Animus quests follow the same rule: you need to reach a specific point in the main story before the quest becomes available, and you must complete them in order. Skipping ahead in story progress doesn't let you skip quests. Each one has to be triggered and completed before the next one opens up.

The questline is named across its four parts: Wayward Souls, Wayward Desires, Wayward Minds, and True Purpose. Completing all four rewards you with the Dark Animus Corsair Pistol Swords, which makes the whole chain worth hunting down.

Quest one: Great Inagua after Sequence 4

Wayward Souls is the starting point, and it's on Great Inagua at coordinates (825, 429), on the southernmost tip of the island. You can reach it by cutting through the jungle from the hideout or by sailing the island's southern coast. This quest unlocks after completing Sequence 4, so it's available fairly early in the playthrough.

Quest two: north of Nassau after Blackbeard's death

Wayward Desires sits on a small island just north of Nassau's port at coordinates (604, 784). It's close enough to the main sailing routes that you might spot it during normal play, but the quest itself won't activate until after Sequence 8, specifically after Blackbeard's Death. Players who sail past it before hitting that story beat will see nothing there.

Quest three: Sacrifice Island after Sequence 11

Wayward Minds is on Sacrifice Island, at the northwest tip, coordinates (14, 559). The main story sends you to Sacrifice Island at one point, but the Dark Animus gate won't be visible until after Sequence 11. You'll almost certainly need to sail back there specifically after reaching that story milestone, since the timing rarely lines up with your first visit.

The finale: True Purpose after the epilogue

True Purpose is the fourth and final quest, located on a small island east of Misteriosa and northeast of Fort Serranilla at coordinates (363, 176). This one is locked behind the game's Epilogue, meaning you have to finish the main story before it opens up.

What most players miss is that True Purpose is genuinely the strongest part of the entire Dark Animus chain. No spoilers here, but the payoff is worth the extra effort of returning to the map post-credits. Once all four quests are done, the Dark Animus Corsair Pistol Swords drop as your reward.
