Anno 117 Prophecies of Ash DLC Deserves More Credit

Anno 117 Prophecies of Ash DLC: Volcano Island Arrives April 23 | GAMES.GG

Prophecies of Ash, the first DLC for Anno 117: Pax Romana, launched into a storm of skepticism. Some players called it thin. Others grumbled about the price. Here's the thing: most of that criticism misses what the expansion actually delivers, and patch 1.6.1 has quietly made it even better.

The biggest island in Anno history is not a small deal

Cinis, the volcanic island at the heart of Prophecies of Ash, is now officially the largest island in the entire Anno series. That distinction became concrete with patch 1.6.1, which expanded the island further after launch. To put that in perspective, Anno 1800's largest islands, which players spent years treating as the gold standard for city-building space, no longer hold that title.

For anyone who has ever hit the wall on a main island and had to awkwardly split production chains across three smaller ones, this matters. A lot. The sheer footprint of Cinis changes how you plan from the ground up, and that kind of structural room to breathe is something the Anno community has been asking for since at least Anno 2070.

Volcano mechanics: stress or strategy?

The active volcano is the DLC's most divisive feature, and the criticism is not entirely unfair. An eruption threatening your carefully arranged production lines does create tension that some players, especially the "Schönbau" crowd focused on aesthetics and relaxed building, genuinely do not want.

What most players miss, though, is the upside. The volcanic activity directly boosts soil fertility across the province of Latium, which feeds into new production chains in ways that compound over time. The god Vulcanus ties into this system, and the Obsidian resource chain gives you something genuinely new to optimize rather than just more of the same Roman goods. The key here is that the volcano is not just a hazard. It is a resource system wearing a hazard costume.

important
Players who dismissed Prophecies of Ash before patch 1.6.1 may want to revisit it. The update added new easter eggs along the mountain path on Cinis, including a mysterious door that has the community actively speculating.

New advisors and the recruitment loop

Prophecies of Ash adds new advisors to recruit, which does not sound exciting on paper but lands differently in practice. Anno 117's advisor system shapes how you approach long-term planning, and fresh options tied to the volcanic region give the expansion its own strategic identity. These are not reskins. They reflect the Latium setting and interact with the new production mechanics in ways that encourage you to actually play differently rather than just slotting them into your existing setup.

What the DLC does not fix (and why that is okay)

The honest version of this piece has to acknowledge what Prophecies of Ash leaves untouched. The passive trade balance issues that defined much of Anno 117's early criticism, and which were partially addressed in update 1.5, are not solved here. Players who wanted the DLC to be a course correction for the base game's rougher edges will be disappointed.

But that was never what a content expansion was going to do. Prophecies of Ash is not a patch. It is new content built on top of the existing foundation, and judging it for not being a systems overhaul is the wrong frame entirely. The Year 1 Pass, which includes this DLC alongside the Hippodrome content and an Egypt region later in the year, runs around $38. Taken as one piece of a larger roadmap rather than a standalone fix, the value proposition reads differently.

The easter egg layer that nobody is talking about

Post-1.6.1, the mountain path on Cinis has become one of the more quietly interesting things in the game. The developers seeded it with easter eggs, and the community is still cataloguing what is up there. The mysterious door at the end of the path has generated genuine speculation. This is the kind of low-key environmental storytelling that Anno rarely does, and it is the sort of detail that rewards players who actually explore rather than just optimize.

It does not fix anything. It does not add a production chain. But it makes the island feel like a place rather than a resource node, and that is worth something.

The bigger picture for Anno 117

Prophecies of Ash is not a perfect DLC. But the version of it that exists after patch 1.6.1 is meaningfully better than what launched, and the initial wave of criticism landed before that update shipped. The Egypt region is still coming, the Hippodrome content is in the pipeline, and Ubisoft has shown it will iterate on this game rather than abandon it.

If you have been sitting on the fence, the Ashfall community's approach to post-launch support offers an interesting parallel: players who engage with content updates as they evolve tend to get more out of them than those who judge the day-one version and walk away. For deeper Anno 117 strategy as the Year 1 content continues to roll out, the gaming guides hub has you covered on the broader mechanics front, and the Ashfall guides collection is worth bookmarking for build optimization as new content drops.
