Arc Raiders bans free loadouts from night raids and Close Scrutiny

Embark Studios has restricted free loadouts in Arc Raiders night raids and Close Scrutiny for three weeks, responding to long-standing community requests while the game hits a quiet patch.

Arc Raiders is finally testing a ban on ...

ARC Raiders patch 1.33.0 has finally delivered one of the community's most-requested changes: free loadouts are now banned from night raids and the Close Scrutiny Arc event. The catch is it's a three-week experiment, not a permanent fix, and it arrives during what Embark Studios openly admits is a "quieter period" that has left a portion of the player base restless.

What changed in patch 1.33.0

Embark's reasoning is straightforward. Night raids and Close Scrutiny both offer better loot than standard raids, so players who drop in with a free kit face almost no downside. Someone with a full gear set risks losing everything; the free-loadout player risks nothing. That asymmetry has frustrated geared players since the game launched.

Here's the thing: Embark isn't just removing free kits from these modes. The studio is simultaneously raising the loot floor in both, so the risk-reward ratio improves across the board. You'll have to bring something, but the payoff for doing so goes up too.

important
The free loadout restriction in night raids and Close Scrutiny is time-limited to three weeks. Embark has said it may extend the change to additional map conditions depending on player feedback and data.

This stops short of a hard gear minimum. There's no credit floor like the 5,000-credit requirement found in some competing extraction shooters' endgame maps. Technically, a player could enter with zero gear, but they won't be a meaningful threat until they scavenge enough to fight back.

The broader context: a community running low on patience

The timing matters. Arc Raiders has been coasting since its last major content drop, and Embark recently confirmed the next significant update, Frozen Trail, won't arrive until October. That's a long runway, and the studio knows it.

"We know that this quieter period is taking some getting used to, and we completely understand the desire for more things to do in the game," Embark said in the patch notes. The studio is leaning on Projects and Events to fill the gap, with the understanding that Frozen Trail is being built to be the largest update yet.

Compounding the content drought, Arc Raiders has also been dealing with a significant item duplication problem. Embark has promised stricter enforcement measures and additional anti-cheat support, but the combination of cheated gear flooding lobbies and a slow patch cadence has pushed some players toward frustration. Steam review sentiment has wobbled noticeably in recent weeks.

What this means for how you play

For players who have been grinding gear and getting stomped by risk-free opponents in the game's best loot modes, this change is exactly what they asked for. Night raids and Close Scrutiny rounds should feel more competitive now, with everyone in the lobby having something to lose.

The free loadout option isn't going anywhere from standard raids. Embark has been careful to frame this as a targeted, experimental change rather than a broad nerf to accessibility. New players and casual raiders still have a path in.

What most players miss is that this also changes the psychological dynamic of these modes. Knowing every opponent has committed real gear shifts how people play: fewer yolo rushes, more deliberate positioning, higher stakes on every engagement.

Embark has acknowledged the road to October is long, and the studio is clearly trying to buy goodwill with targeted quality-of-life moves while the big update bakes. Whether a free-loadout restriction is enough to hold the attention of players who feel they've exhausted current content is a separate question entirely.
