Back to School Gaming Setup Guide 2026

Back to school sales are live and the smartest buys are the ones that pull double duty. Here are three pieces of gaming tech that handle work just as well as ranked matches.

Back to school sales are running hard right now, with Best Buy joining a wave of retailers offering student discounts on tech. The problem most students run into is not the budget itself but the decision: do you buy for school or do you buy for gaming? Here is the thing, the right three picks make that a false choice entirely.

The setup worth building right now centers on a gaming laptop, a pair of wireless gaming earbuds, and a gaming mouse that earns its place at a desk beyond just fragging opponents. Each one covers both worlds without compromise, and each one is currently sitting at a meaningful discount.

The laptop that fits in a library bag

Gaming laptops have a reputation problem in academic settings. Chunky chassis, aggressive venting, and battery lives measured in coffee breaks. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (RTX 5060 model) sidesteps most of those complaints with a slimline build that sits comfortably next to any mid-range productivity laptop in a backpack. It is currently discounted to around $1,900 from $2,300 at Best Buy, roughly 17% off.

The trade-off is battery life. Expect around four hours of real-world study use before you are hunting for a wall socket. That is the one honest drawback here, and it is worth knowing upfront. Performance under load is not the issue; the AMD Ryzen 9 processor and RTX 5060 GPU handle both spreadsheets and GPU-heavy titles without breaking a sweat.

If battery life matters more than raw performance, the Asus TUF A14 with its AMD Ryzen AI chip leans harder into power efficiency and still plays games well. It comes in closer to $1,500 on sale days. Either way, a gaming laptop beats a desktop for student life purely on portability grounds, and the extra compute headroom pays off for anything beyond light document work.

tip
If you are running demanding PC titles like Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core, check the best graphics settings for max FPS before your first session on a new laptop. Getting those settings dialed in early saves a lot of frustration.

Earbuds that go from lecture hall to late-night queues

Most gaming-focused earbuds are built for one thing: low latency. That singular focus often makes them awkward outside a gaming context, with Bluetooth connections that lag on music apps or onboard controls that only map to in-game functions.

The SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds solve that. They run 2.4GHz wireless for gaming with a clean Bluetooth fallback for everything else, and the onboard controls handle playback, calls, and volume without needing a companion app open. The current Best Buy price sits at $160, down from $200, a 20% discount. For earbuds that replace both your everyday carry and your gaming headset, that is genuinely good value.

One honest caveat: the fit requires a deliberate twist to seat the buds properly. If they shift even slightly, the ear detection feature triggers repeated audio pauses. Disabling ear detection fixes it, but it is a quirk worth knowing before you are mid-lecture.

A gaming mouse that also runs your workflow

Using a trackpad for competitive gaming is genuinely painful. But the argument for a dedicated gaming mouse gets even stronger when that mouse also speeds up your coursework.

The Corsair Scimitar Elite Wireless SE carries a 12-button side panel typically associated with MMO players, but here it pulls double duty as a fully programmable macro deck with Stream Deck integration. That means the same buttons mapping your inventory in an RPG can also launch apps, trigger keyboard shortcuts, or cycle between browser tabs during a study session. At $80 down from $140, it is currently sitting at a 43% discount at Amazon.

What most players miss about MMO mice is how transferable that side panel becomes outside of games. Having 12 programmable inputs under your thumb changes how fast you move through productivity tasks, not just how fast you loot a dungeon.

And if you are planning ahead for upcoming PC releases, the Control Resonant PC system requirements are already posted so you can check whether your new setup is ready before launch day.
