Ball x Pit Naturalist Update: Final Free Update Incoming

Kenny Sun Studios built something genuinely special with Ball x Pit in 2025. The fast-paced fantasy roguelite arrived with enough ideas packed into it that it probably should have buckled under its own weight, yet somehow held together. Now the studio is back with what it's calling the Naturalist Update, and players should know upfront: this is the last free content the game will receive.

The announcement is short and punchy. "We're back with even more balls in the Naturalist Update, our final free update. More news soon." That's it. No release date, no full content breakdown, just confirmation that the update is coming and that the free ride ends here.

What "final free update" actually means for players

The key here is what the announcement does not say. The studio explicitly notes this is the final free update, which leaves the door wide open for paid DLC or additional content drops down the line. Fans who were hoping the game would keep expanding at no extra cost should temper those expectations, but the phrasing strongly suggests Ball x Pit's post-launch life is not over.

For anyone who has been sleeping on the game, Ball x Pit also received a free Switch 2 upgrade pack, so players on Nintendo's newer hardware are already running the best version available. The Naturalist Update will presumably carry forward to that edition as well, though the studio has not confirmed specifics yet.

The Naturalist Update has no confirmed release date beyond "coming soon." Keep an eye on official channels from Kenny Sun Studios for the full content reveal.

Building your roster before the update drops

With a new update on the horizon, now is a smart time to get your Ball x Pit roster in order. The game currently features 16 unlockable characters, and if you have not worked through all of them yet, our Ball x Pit complete character unlock and build guide covers every character and which builds suit each playstyle.

Passive evolutions are where Ball x Pit's depth really opens up. Combinations that unlock powerful forms like Soul Reaver and Deadeyes Cross reward players who understand how passives stack and interact. If that side of the game has felt opaque, the passive evolution ranked guide breaks down which combos are worth prioritizing before new content arrives and potentially reshuffles the meta.

The bigger picture for a game that earned its audience

Ball x Pit launched quietly and built its reputation through word of mouth. The roguelite genre is crowded, but the game carved out space by committing fully to its own logic, layering mechanics that reward both impulsive runs and deliberate build planning. That combination is exactly why the community has stayed engaged long enough for the studio to keep delivering updates.

Paid content after a free post-launch run is a reasonable model, especially for an indie title that has clearly delivered on its original promise. The question now is what the Naturalist Update actually adds and whether it sets up whatever comes next.

Pro tip: if the most recent update, the Regal Update, introduced Falconer and Carouser to your roster but you have not fully figured out how to unlock them yet, the Falconer and Carouser unlock guide will get you sorted before the Naturalist content arrives and gives you even more to work through.
