Diablo IV reportedly hits Switch 2 next month as a $69.99 code-in-box

Diablo IV is reportedly launching on Nintendo Switch 2 in September at $69.99, but buyers should brace for a code-in-box release with no cartridge included.

New evidence emerges of Diablo 4 coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Three years after launch, Diablo IV is reportedly heading to Nintendo Switch 2 next month, and a reliable leaker has already pinned down a price point, a release window, and a packaging decision that's going to frustrate a lot of people.

The September window and what's actually in the box

Leaker Billbil-kun, who has a strong track record on retail leaks, points to either September 15 or 18 as the Switch 2 launch date for Diablo IV. A physical box will exist, but here's the thing: there's no cartridge inside. No Game-Key Card either. Just a download code sitting in a box on a store shelf.

That's a decision that's going to land poorly with collectors and anyone who bought into Switch 2 specifically because of the format's physical-first reputation. Paying shelf-product prices for what is effectively a printed redemption code is a tough sell, and it's not the first time Switch 2 ports have leaned on this approach.

The $69.99 question and what it should include

The reported price is $69.99. That number matters because it matches the Age of Hatred collection bundle available on other platforms, which packages the base game together with both the Lord of Hatred and Vessel of Hatred DLC expansions.

important
It's currently unknown whether the Switch 2 version at $69.99 actually includes the DLC. Billbil-kun notes this detail hasn't been confirmed, which makes the price feel speculative at best and steep at worst if it only covers the base game.

For context, Diablo IV's base game has been available for significantly less on other platforms for a while now, and Season 14 content is already live. Charging $69.99 without bundling the expansions would be a hard ask for Switch 2 owners coming in fresh.

How this port went from "maybe" to "next month"

This port didn't come out of nowhere. Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson had flagged the Switch 2 as a potential target, but was candid about the complications, specifically noting that "live services on Switch have been a little bit challenging in the past." That comment aged quickly.

Back in June, the Taiwan Entertainment Software Rating board listed the Lord of Hatred expansion with a Switch 2 platform tag, which was the clearest signal yet that Blizzard Entertainment had sorted out whatever technical hurdles were in the way. A September release date, if accurate, means the gap between that rating and launch is remarkably short.

Gamescom as the likely reveal moment

Billbil-kun speculates the official announcement could come at Gamescom 2026, which runs at the end of August. That timing lines up neatly with a September release and would give Blizzard a high-profile stage to confirm the port, clarify the DLC situation, and address the code-in-box format head-on.

If you're planning to jump into Diablo IV on Switch 2 and want to hit the ground running, check out the Diablo IV Season 14 tier list covering the best classes and builds before the port drops. The meta is already well-established on other platforms, so Switch 2 players won't be going in blind.

The bigger picture here is that Blizzard is clearly not done expanding Diablo IV's player base. A Switch 2 port three years post-launch, timed alongside an active seasonal content schedule, is a deliberate move to pull in a new audience. The code-in-box approach and the unconfirmed DLC situation are the two things worth watching before putting down $69.99. Keep an eye on Gamescom for the official word.
