FFXIV raid designer Masayoshi Ishikawa reveals he put FF11's notorious Absolute Virtue in Windurst: The Third Walk just to show how powerful Shantotto truly is.

"The cherry on top is that she defeats Absolute Virtue in the cutscene before the battle starts." That's Masayoshi Ishikawa, battle content designer on Final Fantasy XIV Online, explaining with a chuckle exactly why one of Final Fantasy 11's most notorious bosses shows up in Windurst: The Third Walk only to get immediately dismantled before a single mechanic fires.

Why Absolute Virtue is even there

For players who never touched FF11, Absolute Virtue is the kind of boss that gets passed down in gamer folklore. At its peak difficulty, it was arguably the hardest superboss in the entire Final Fantasy series. Square Enix famously drew heat from the community for disqualifying teams that cleared it through unintended methods, and the devs eventually had to release hints before conceding and nerfing it outright. That process took years.

So having it appear in Windurst: The Third Walk, the finale to the Echoes of Vana'diel crossover in FFXIV, carries real weight for anyone who remembers those days. The catch is that it doesn't actually fight you. Shantotto dispatches it in the pre-battle cutscene before you even load into the encounter.

That was entirely deliberate.

Showing strength within first-boss limits

Here's the thing about designing the opening boss of a raid tier: there are hard constraints on how threatening you can actually make her. She's the first gate, not the final wall. Ishikawa acknowledged this directly, explaining that because Shantotto is the first boss, the team had limits on her raw damage output and mechanical complexity.

To work around that, the team leaned into spectacle. Meteor rains down mid-fight. Quake literally raises walls from the ground. A barrage of mage actions fires off in quick succession, all calibrated so that even players with zero FF11 background can clock immediately that this is a black mage of exceptional power. The visual language does the storytelling that raw numbers can't.

But the real flex? Absolute Virtue. Ishikawa noted the interviewer's follow-up question directly: if that cutscene didn't exist, could Absolute Virtue have been Windurst's first boss? His answer, delivered with a laugh: "Could've been."

Windurst: The Third Walk is the concluding raid in the Echoes of Vana'diel series, a crossover arc pulling characters and lore from Final Fantasy 11 into FFXIV's current patch cycle.

What this means for how FFXIV tells stories through raids

This design choice reflects something FFXIV's raid team has been doing more deliberately over recent content cycles: using pre-fight cutscenes to establish power hierarchies that the fight mechanics alone can't convey. A first boss, by definition, needs to be clearable by a wide range of players in the first week. That ceiling limits how menacing you can make a character feel through damage numbers alone.

Using a cameo from FF11's most infamous boss as a punching bag sidesteps that problem entirely. Shantotto doesn't need to one-shot your party to feel dangerous. She one-shots a legend before the encounter even begins.

For players catching up on everything the current patch cycle introduced, the FFXIV Patch 7.4 Into the Mist complete content guide covers the full scope of new raids, dungeons, and job changes that set the stage for the Echoes of Vana'diel finale.

The FF11 crossover legacy

The Echoes of Vana'diel arc has been one of the more ambitious crossover series FFXIV has attempted, leaning hard into FF11 nostalgia while making the content accessible to players who never set foot in Vana'diel. Shantotto, as a character, is a natural anchor for that. She's been a recurring presence across the Final Fantasy series for years, and her personality, a genius black mage with zero patience for anyone she considers beneath her, translates cleanly into raid design.

Having her casually dismantle a boss that once made entire player communities give up is a payoff that lands differently depending on your history with the franchise. For FF11 veterans, it's a knowing wink. For everyone else, it's a clean, effective way to signal that the fight you're about to enter is against someone genuinely formidable.

If you're exploring the rest of what FFXIV's current content has to offer, the Final Fantasy XIV Online guides collection has everything from dungeon walkthroughs to variant content breakdowns to get you up to speed.
