FF7 Revelation director confirms the story ends in the base game

Naoki Hamaguchi says Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will definitively close the remake trilogy's story, with any future DLC taking a spin-off approach rather than adding an epilogue.

FF7 Revelation director confirms the story ends in the base game

Naoki Hamaguchi has put a firm stop to one of the bigger fan anxieties surrounding Final Fantasy 7 Revelation: no, the game will not end on a cliffhanger that gets resolved through paid DLC later.

In a recent interview, the director of the third and final entry in the remake trilogy was direct about how the story will be handled. "The story will be concluded within the main game," Hamaguchi stated. "We're serious about concluding the series with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and we're proceeding with development with that goal in mind."

For anyone who has been following Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the broader remake project since 2020, that's a meaningful commitment.

Why this question needed answering

The concern wasn't baseless. Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched in 2020 and received an enhanced PS5 version the following year called Intergrade, which bundled a new story chapter called Episode Intermission starring Yuffie. It was genuinely good content, but it also set a precedent: the first game got a narrative expansion after the fact.

Rebirth broke that pattern entirely. Square Enix skipped any major story DLC for Part 2, with Hamaguchi previously explaining that fans had already waited long enough for the trilogy to wrap up, and that getting the third game out at a satisfying level of polish was the priority. That decision to skip Rebirth DLC was the right call for momentum, but it left the door open for speculation about whether Revelation might follow the Remake model instead.

Hamaguchi acknowledged the expectation directly. "I feel that, at this point, both the media and the fan community are expecting a DLC to come," he said, adding that he senses fans simply don't want the FF7 story to end.

The spin-off model, not an epilogue

Here's the thing: Hamaguchi didn't completely rule out DLC. What he ruled out is DLC that extends or patches up the main story. If Revelation gets post-launch content, it would look more like Episode Intermission than a narrative continuation.

"If we were to hypothetically release any DLC, we would likely want to create a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories, kind of like what we did with Yuffie," he explained.

That framing matters. A character-focused spin-off is optional enrichment. An epilogue DLC would be a problem, essentially gating the true ending behind an extra purchase. Hamaguchi is drawing a clear line between the two.

important
Hamaguchi has not confirmed any DLC is in development. His comments describe a hypothetical approach only, contingent on fan demand and support.

The caveat worth flagging: an Epic Games Store listing surfaced last month that appeared to include a "Story Expansion Pass" for Revelation among its DLC entries. Hamaguchi's comments don't contradict that leak outright, since a character spin-off could technically be marketed as a story expansion. What he is ruling out is that the base game leaves anything unresolved.

What this means for how you play Revelation

The practical takeaway is straightforward: you won't need to buy anything extra to see how the remake trilogy ends. Whatever Square Enix releases after launch, the core conclusion will be in the base game.

That's a different situation than some RPG trilogies where post-credits scenes or late-game ambiguity clearly set up paid follow-up content. Hamaguchi is explicitly saying that's not the plan here.

For players who have invested time mastering the combat systems across Remake and Rebirth, including working through FF7 Rebirth's best character builds and the weapon abilities that define each party member's role, Revelation is where that investment pays off in full.

The question of whether any spin-off DLC actually materializes will depend on how Revelation lands with fans. Hamaguchi was careful not to promise anything beyond the base game's story. But the framework he described, character-specific stories filling in gaps rather than extending the ending, is exactly the kind of content that keeps a beloved world alive without undermining the main event.
