GTA 5 Dev Says GTA 6 Map Size Must Be Monstrous

Former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio says he can only imagine how large GTA 6's world is, calling it "monstrous" based on the franchise's history of scale.

My Version of the Grand Theft Auto 6 Map : r/GTA6

The hype around Grand Theft Auto 6 keeps building from unexpected directions. This time it's coming from someone who knows Rockstar's ambitions firsthand.

John Ricchio, a former producer at Rockstar Games with credits spanning GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption, and Max Payne 3, was recently asked whether he'd want to be involved with GTA 6 ahead of its launch. His answer said a lot about what players might be walking into.

What a GTA 5 veteran actually expects from the sequel

"I think the fact that every single time they do a GTA, it's ludicrously bigger than before is like something that I think about," Ricchio said in a conversation with YouTuber Kiwi Talkz. "Like, I can only imagine the size of GTA 6. Like it must be monstrous. Or if not monstrous, it's probably way more detailed."

That framing is telling. Ricchio isn't just guessing blindly. He's working from a pattern he watched develop in real time. GTA 5 was significantly bigger than GTA 4, which itself expanded on what came before it. Even the jump between GTA entries and Red Dead Redemption showed Rockstar consistently pushing the boundaries of what their worlds could contain. "Even between GTA and RDR, they were continually growing the size of the world," he noted.

Here's the thing: when someone who built those worlds says the next one must be monstrous, that carries more weight than a forum post or analyst projection.

The human cost behind the scale

Ricchio's comments weren't purely celebratory. He's candid about what building worlds at that scale actually demands from the people making them.

"I'm pretty happy that I'm not on GTA 6," he said, laughing. "Not that it wouldn't be cool to work with those people... but it is really difficult, and it's a hard period of your career when you're working that hard on something."

This tracks with what's been said publicly about Rockstar's development culture. The studio has long been associated with long hours and high expectations, and a project of GTA 6's reported scope would push that further than anything they've attempted before. Ricchio describes the eventual payoff as "magic" and "so rewarding" when you see the audience's reaction, but he's clear-eyed about the toll it takes to get there.

Ricchio worked at Rockstar during the GTA 5 era and has no direct knowledge of GTA 6's development. His comments are informed speculation based on the franchise's established pattern of growth.

Size versus detail: the real question

What most players miss in Ricchio's quote is the second half. He doesn't just say the world will be massive. He leaves open the possibility that Rockstar may have traded raw square mileage for density, saying it's "probably way more detailed" if not outright larger.

That distinction matters. GTA 5's Los Santos felt alive because of what filled the space, not just how much space existed. If GTA 6's version of Vice City and its surrounding areas match or exceed that density while also being physically larger, the result would be something genuinely difficult to compare to anything else in open-world gaming.

Analysts have projected GTA 6 could move up to $5 billion in sales by the end of launch week, a number that reflects just how much anticipation has built around this release. A world that justifies those expectations needs to be more than a big empty map.

What this means heading into launch

Ricchio's perspective adds a grounded, insider-adjacent voice to the conversation around GTA 6's ambitions. He's not a hype machine. He's someone who built GTA 5 and knows what it took, and even he can't fully picture what the current team has put together.

For players already tracking every confirmed detail, from the confirmed weapons and gear to platform-specific features, the underlying question is whether the world itself will match the buildup. If Rockstar's own trajectory is any guide, Ricchio's instinct is probably right. The world is going to be enormous. The real test is whether it feels worth living in.

Keep an eye on the full GTA 6 guide collection as more details surface ahead of launch.
