Grand Theft Auto VI Physical Download Codes in Japan Expire After 170 Days, Rockstar Confirms

Japan has one of the most dedicated gaming communities on the planet. So here's a detail that PS5 owners there will want to know before picking up a physical copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 on launch day.

The clock starts ticking on November 19

Take-Two Interactive has quietly confirmed, through an update to the official Grand Theft Auto VI platform editions and versions support page, that physical PS5 copies sold in Japan contain download codes with a hard expiry date. Specifically, those codes will stop working 170 days after the game's launch date of November 19, 2026, placing the deadline somewhere around mid-May 2027.

The reason given is regional regulations. Japan has consumer protection laws that require expiry dates to be disclosed on digital goods, and Take-Two is complying by baking that window directly into the code terms. It's a legal obligation, not a deliberate anti-consumer move, but the practical impact on players is the same either way.

Here's the thing: GTA 6 has no disc version. There is no physical media inside that box. The entire game lives on a download code, which means any Japanese player who buys a physical copy and forgets to redeem it before day 170 ends up with an empty case and a dead code.

Why this is messier than it sounds

For most players who pick up the game on or near launch day, 170 days is a reasonable window. But gaming shelves don't clear out in the first week. Retailers in Japan will likely stock physical copies for months, and a unit sitting on a shelf for 60 or 90 days before purchase would leave the buyer with a significantly shorter redemption window than advertised.

The situation gets even more complicated for gift buyers. Someone picking up GTA 6 as a present for a birthday or holiday could unknowingly hand over a code that's already burning through its lifespan.

important
The 170-day expiry applies specifically to PS5 physical copies sold in Japan. Xbox physical copies are not region-locked in the same way, so Xbox players in Japan are not affected by this particular issue.

Players who buy digitally through the PlayStation Network are not affected at all. The code expiry only applies to the physical box version, which is the only way to get a download code for the PS5 version of the game.

What this reveals about the all-digital push

The timing here is worth noting. Sony has been moving aggressively toward an all-digital future, and GTA 6 launching without a disc version on PS5 is one of the clearest examples yet of that shift playing out at the highest level of the industry. A game of this scale shipping exclusively with a download code, even in physical packaging, is a significant moment.

For Japanese consumers specifically, this situation puts a spotlight on the friction that comes with digital-only distribution when regional laws and retail timelines collide. The code expiry is technically a compliance measure, but it also highlights how much consumer control gets quietly eroded when physical media disappears from the equation.

Rockstar and Take-Two have not issued a public statement beyond the support page update. Whether retailers in Japan will be required to display the expiry date prominently on store shelves, or whether buyers will only discover it in the fine print, remains unclear.

If you're planning to pick up a physical copy at launch, the GTA 6 editions guide breaks down exactly what's included in each version and what to watch for before you buy.
