Rockstar Clarifies Which GTA 6 Pre-Order Codes Are Region-Locked

Rockstar has updated its support page with a full breakdown of which GTA 6 physical download codes are region-locked on PS5, and Japan faces an extra expiry date twist.

GTAVI - PlayStation 5 - Pre-Order Now ...

"Based on where you buy your copy at retail, some restrictions on where that code can be redeemed will apply." That's the short version of what Rockstar Games just posted to its official support page, and if you're planning to pick up a physical copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 at launch, you'll want to read the fine print before handing over your cash.

The confusion started roughly a month ago when pre-orders went live and retailers began posting conflicting information about which regions the code-in-the-box format would actually support. Rockstar has now put that to rest with a detailed support article listing exactly which countries each regional code can be redeemed in.

Why PS5 buyers are the only ones affected

Here's the thing: this is entirely a PlayStation problem. Xbox codes for GTA 6 are not region-locked at all, meaning you can buy a copy anywhere in the world and redeem it on any Xbox account regardless of its region. PlayStation Network's account structure works differently, and that's what creates the restriction.

The practical advice from Rockstar is simple: buy your copy in a country that matches your PSN account region. A US copy needs a US account. A UK copy needs a UK account. Cross those wires and the code won't work.

The full regional breakdown

Rockstar's support page lists every major region and which countries fall under each code's redemption zone. Here's the complete picture:

The Rest of EMEA and Asia grouping is by far the largest, covering most of Western Europe, Oceania, and several other markets under one redeemable code zone.

Japan's extra wrinkle: codes that expire

Japanese buyers have an additional issue to navigate. Physical copies sold in Japan come with a code that expires 170 days after it was printed, which Rockstar says is required under local regulations. Assuming codes were printed around the November 19 launch date, the last valid redemption window closes on May 8, 2027.

That's a meaningful deadline. If you buy a Japanese physical copy and sit on it for a few months, you could end up with a useless code.

Japanese GTA 6 physical codes expire 170 days from print date. If the code was printed at launch on November 19, the redemption deadline falls on May 8, 2027. Don't leave it too long.

The bigger picture for physical buyers

This situation exists because Rockstar chose to ship physical copies of GTA 6 without a disc. The box contains a download code and nothing else. That decision pushed a significant number of buyers toward digital storefronts instead, and GTA 6 has been topping pre-order charts across nearly every regional PlayStation Store as a result.

There are conflicting signals about whether a disc-based version will ever arrive. One insider suggested a disc release could come before the end of the year, but others have pushed back on that, saying Rockstar has no current plans to change the physical format.

For now, the safest path for physical buyers is to match your purchase region to your account region and, if you're in Japan, redeem that code well before the May 2027 cutoff. For a full rundown of what each edition includes and which pre-order bonuses are attached, the GTA 6 editions guide has everything broken down. And if you still need to lock in your purchase, the GTA 6 pre-order guide covers exactly how to do it on both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
