Halo: Campaign Evolved on handheld needs upscaling to shine

Running Halo: Campaign Evolved natively on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X delivers rough frame rates. FSR Medium with very low graphics is the sweet spot.

Coming to XBOX Game Pass: Halo: Campaign Evolved, Beast of Reincarnation, and More - XBOX Wire

Native performance numbers rarely lie, and on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, Halo: Campaign Evolved tells a pretty bleak story without upscaling. Sitting at an average of 20 fps with 1% lows of just 14.3 fps using TSR native, the game is technically playable only in the loosest definition of the word. The good news? Flip on upscaling and things get considerably more manageable.

What native mode actually means here

Here's the thing: Halo: Campaign Evolved does not offer a true no-upscaling option as of this writing. What the game calls "native" modes for TSR, FSR, and DLSS still apply a form of anti-aliasing processing. You are not getting a clean, unfiltered pixel output. You are getting the image quality treatment without any of the frame rate benefits that come with actual resolution scaling.

That distinction matters because it means even the baseline experience carries some overhead, and the results on the ROG Xbox Ally X reflect that. The device is no budget unit either. It packs an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor with Zen 5 architecture and 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory, making it one of the more capable handhelds on the market right now. Testing was done in performance mode while plugged in, running at approximately 17 W.

The upscaling numbers, broken down

Testing across multiple presets on the Very Low graphics setting paints a clear picture:

Loading table...

FSR Low hits an average of 49 fps with lows around 39 fps, which looks great on paper. The catch is image clarity. On a small 1080p display it is serviceable, but FSR Low gives up enough sharpness that it starts to look a bit soupy in motion. FSR Medium lands at 43 fps average with 34 fps lows, and that is where the quality-to-performance trade-off actually makes sense.

tip
Turn off motion blur in the settings. The implementation in Halo: Campaign Evolved on handheld makes fast panning feel messy, and disabling it cleans up the image noticeably.

TSR is a more conservative upscaler here. Even at TSR Low, the frame rate tops out around 33 fps average, and the 1% lows sit at 30 fps. That is actually a more consistent floor than FSR's equivalent presets, which makes TSR worth considering if you prioritize smoothness over peak numbers. The image quality between TSR and FSR at comparable presets is close enough that the choice really comes down to which metric you weight more heavily.

Why FSR Medium on Very Low is the actual sweet spot

The visual gap between Low and Ultra graphics settings in Halo: Campaign Evolved is surprisingly narrow on a 7-inch handheld screen. Textures are a touch softer, some environmental detail drops off, but the core look of the game stays intact. That makes Very Low a genuinely reasonable choice rather than a desperate compromise.

Paired with FSR Medium, you get an average of around 43 fps and 1% lows in the mid-30s. For a shooter game on a handheld, that is a comfortable place to be. The game remains responsive, gunfights feel clean, and the small screen size means FSR Medium's upscaling artifacts are far less noticeable than they would be on a 27-inch monitor.

FSR Low does push the numbers higher, but the clarity cost is real. On a bigger display it would be a non-starter. On the ROG Xbox Ally X's compact screen, it is borderline acceptable, but FSR Medium is the better call for anyone who wants to actually enjoy what they are looking at.

What most players miss is that Halo: Campaign Evolved also includes a handheld-specific Very Low mode that is not accessible on standard desktop configurations. That extra preset exists precisely because 343 and Microsoft know the game needs help at this power envelope, and it does make a tangible difference in frame rate headroom.

If you are planning to pick this up and want to know what version to get before committing, the Halo: Campaign Evolved editions and pre-order bonuses guide breaks down every option available at launch.
