Mahou Arms 1.0: NieR-Style Indie Action Game on Steam

Dischan Media's Mahou Arms just launched version 1.0 on Steam after 9 years of development, blending paramilitary magical girls with NieR:Automata-style action combat.

Dischan Media lead developer Softmode posted to Reddit this week with three words that sum up nine years of work: "I haven't slept in 48 hours." The occasion? Mahou Arms finally launched version 1.0 on Steam, capping a development journey that started in a parents' basement back in 2017.

The timing is hard to ignore. Work on Mahou Arms kicked off the same year NieR:Automata hit shelves, and the influence seeped deep into the game's DNA over the years that followed.

What paramilitary magical girls actually play like

The premise is exactly as anime as it sounds: two magical girls are Earth's last line of defense against an unknown alien invasion force. But the execution goes further than the elevator pitch suggests. Mahou Arms is a third-person action game at its core, built around melee combat that feeds into a Devil May Cry-style combo meter. Push it hard enough and you hit SSS-grade territory.

Here's the thing, though. Like NieR:Automata before it, the game refuses to stay in one lane. A strategy-style battlefield overview layer sits alongside the close-quarters combat, shifting perspective in a way that keeps things from feeling predictable. Tag-team mechanics let you chain the two leads together for extended combos, and version 1.0 added romance side quests for players who want something more than just the fighting.

Softmode was direct about the scope: "The story has a beginning and end, there's 6-10 hours of not-procedural gameplay, and not a single pixel of generated art, audio, narrative, or code." That last part matters right now. The entire game was built by a core team of two, with contractors brought in for music, sound, and voice acting when the budget allowed.

Dischan Media recommends existing early access players start a new save file after the 1.0 update, since new content and level changes affect the full story experience.

Six years in early access, one very long final sprint

Mahou Arms spent roughly six years in Steam early access before this week's full launch. That's a long runway, and the game has collected 542 reviews over its lifetime, sitting at 78% positive. Some 1.0 launch issues have already been flagged by the team and are being addressed in follow-up patches.

The visual approach is worth calling out. Dischan Media mixed minimalist 3D environments with hand-crafted 2D animation, giving the game a retro anime aesthetic that pairs with a piano-heavy soundtrack. The result feels deliberate rather than budget-constrained, which is a real achievement for a two-person core team.

Dischan Media is best known for visual novel work, including Juniper's Knot, so the shift to character action over nearly a decade represents a serious pivot. The NieR:Automata comparison isn't just marketing shorthand. The genre-mixing, the tonal contrast between cute character designs and serious stakes, and the emphasis on combat depth all point to the same influences that made Yoko Taro's game so memorable.

What this means for players looking for their next action fix

For anyone who burned through NieR:Automata and has been hunting for something with comparable ambition on a smaller scale, Mahou Arms is worth a look. The 6-10 hour runtime is honest about what it is: a focused, handmade experience rather than an open-world time sink.

The game is live on Steam now at version 1.0. If you want more context on the NieR:Automata action formula that clearly inspired it, the strategy guides break down the combat systems worth understanding before you draw comparisons.
