Manor Lords' next beta update adds what all video games are sorely missing: cow breeding | Rock Paper Shotgun

Manor Lords has been on a steady climb since its early access launch, and the next beta update is shaping up to be one of the meatiest drops yet. Literally. Developer Slavic Magic is bringing cows to the game, and with them comes a full livestock economy, a brand-new map, and a reworked construction system that changes how buildings go up from the ground floor.

Cows, milk, and the medieval supply chain you never knew you needed

Here's the thing: cow breeding in a city-builder is not a small feature. When livestock arrives in Manor Lords, players will be able to import cows and breed them over time, feeding a production chain that covers milk, beef, and cheese. Pastures will now require actual materials to set up, and seasonal feeding mechanics mean you will need to plan ahead for winter. That last part fits perfectly with how Manor Lords already handles resource scarcity.

The key here is that this is not just a cosmetic addition. Milk and cheese open up new food variety options for your population, which ties directly into the happiness and growth systems that experienced players already spend a lot of time managing. Beef adds another layer to the meat supply, which previously leaned heavily on hunting. A full livestock economy changes the calculus on how you plan your villages.

Oats are also arriving as a new crop, presumably tied to feeding your animals through the colder months. That kind of systemic depth is exactly what cozy games with survival mechanics do well, and Manor Lords has always sat in that space between pastoral management and genuine strategic pressure.

The Wide Valley map and what it changes for players

The update introduces a new map called Wide Valley, featuring two rivers running through the terrain. Two rivers means two natural boundaries, two potential mill sites, and two fishing spots competing for your attention during placement. For a game where geography shapes almost every decision you make, a dual-river layout will push players toward different expansion strategies than the existing maps allow.

Wide Valley is set to arrive alongside seasonal workplace scheduling, which lets you assign workers to different tasks depending on the time of year. Trading post filters are also coming, giving players more control over what goods flow in and out without manually micromanaging every route. These are quality-of-life additions, but they address two of the most common friction points veteran players run into at mid-to-late game.

A construction system that finally makes building feel like building

The construction overhaul is arguably the biggest mechanical shift in this update. Buildings are being split into basic and advanced tiers, and the actual process of construction is getting a realistic build-stage system. Skilled builders, handcarts, and ox carts all factor into how quickly and efficiently structures go up.

important
The construction rework is a significant systems change. Players mid-campaign when the update drops may need to adjust existing build queues and worker assignments to account for the new tier structure.

This kind of overhaul signals that Slavic Magic is past the phase of settling technical debt and is now focused on adding mechanical richness. The staged construction approach makes the act of building feel less like placing a tile and more like watching a settlement actually grow.

What the July beta window means for your wishlist

The beta is targeting July, with a broader release penciled in for August. That timeline gives Slavic Magic room to catch feedback on the cow economy and construction changes before they hit the full player base. Given how systematically interconnected Manor Lords is, that testing window matters. A livestock chain that feels unbalanced at scale could ripple into food pricing, worker allocation, and market demand in ways that only show up once hundreds of players are running large settlements simultaneously.

For players who want to stay ahead of the meta shifts coming with this update, the gaming guides hub is worth bookmarking now. Once the beta lands, the community will move fast on figuring out optimal pasture layouts and construction sequencing.
