Marathon's Vault Breaker PvE mode is ...

Bungie is giving Marathon players something they've been asking for since launch: a proper endgame PvE experience where other runners aren't the biggest threat. The mid-season update, landing on July 21, introduces Vault Breaker, an experimental mode that strips out the PvPvE tension and lets you focus entirely on pushing through progressively harder vaults.

What Vault Breaker actually is

Vault Breaker drops players into the Cryo Archive map, the same endgame zone that usually has squads hunting each other for high-tier loot. In this mode, that threat is gone. You can run it solo, as a duo, or with a full crew, and the only thing standing between you and the final vault is a series of increasingly difficult PvE encounters.

Here's the thing: each vault ramps up in difficulty as you push deeper, building toward what Bungie describes as "the final vault and the mysterious entity within." That framing suggests a proper boss encounter at the end, though Bungie hasn't spelled out exactly what form that takes yet.

To enter, you'll need a Sponsored Kit specifically for Vault Breaker. Any gear you find inside stays inside when you leave, which is a deliberate design call to prevent the mode from becoming a loot shortcut that bypasses the regular PvPvE loop.

The new currency and how it flows back into the game

Vault Breaker introduces Vault Data, a currency you can actually extract and carry over into other parts of Marathon. Vault Data upgrades Vault Breaker Sponsored Kits and gear usable across other modes, so there's a real incentive loop here beyond just the PvE experience itself.

This is a smart move by Bungie. Players who prefer not to engage in constant player-versus-player friction now have a progression path that feeds back into the broader game, rather than existing in a vacuum.

Any gear found inside Vault Breaker cannot be extracted. Only Vault Data carries over, so don't go in expecting to kit out your main loadout from a single PvE run.

Cradle Evolution gets its first major reset mechanic

The mid-season update also brings the first significant update to the Cradle Evolution system, Marathon's persistent character upgrade tree. Players who max out their Cradle can now reset it back to zero in exchange for an additional maximum Energy point and exclusive cosmetics.

The cosmetics won't be available in-game immediately, but Bungie confirms they can be earned ahead of their actual debut, which is an interesting way to reward early grinders. The Cradle's progression speed is also getting a boost with this update, so players who felt the current pace was too slow should notice a difference.

Season 3 is closer than you think

Season 3 kicks off on September 22, and Bungie is already flagging it as a bigger structural shift than a typical content drop. The studio has described "big changes to the early game experience" alongside new weapons, equipment, and a fresh Runner shell.

That early-game focus is worth paying attention to. Marathon has been working to broaden its appeal, including a brief free trial period earlier this month, and reworking the onboarding experience could help retain players who bounced off the current learning curve.

The July 21 mid-season update will also include quality-of-life changes that Bungie plans to detail closer to the date, so the full picture isn't locked in yet.
