Meccha Chameleon Was the Second-Highest-Grossing PC Game of June

A $5.99 hide-and-seek indie outsold every PC game in June except Fortnite. Meccha Chameleon's revenue run is as wild as its 15 million sales figure.

Meccha Chameleon Players Recreate the Mona Lisa as Hide-and-Seek Paint Game Passes 7 Million Sales

A $5.99 indie sitting next to Fortnite on the revenue charts

Put yourself in the shoes of a game industry analyst pulling together June's PC revenue rankings. You'd expect the usual suspects at the top: free-to-play giants, live-service behemoths, the kind of titles backed by eight-figure marketing budgets. What you probably wouldn't expect is a chameleon-themed hide-and-seek game that costs less than a fast food combo meal sitting at number two on the entire list.

That's exactly where MECCHA CHAMELEON landed. The indie hit from developer lemorion_1224 finished June as the second-highest-grossing PC game of the month, trailing only Fortnite. The game's price is $5.99.

How 15 million copies at $5.99 adds up fast

The math here is genuinely staggering. MECCHA CHAMELEON hit 7 million sales in its first two weeks, then crossed 15 million copies within its first month, making it both the fastest-selling and best-selling game of 2026 so far. At $5.99 a copy, even accounting for Steam's cut, the raw revenue generated is the kind of number that makes traditional publishers do a double-take.

Here's the thing: Fortnite is free-to-play and generates its revenue entirely through cosmetics and battle passes. MECCHA CHAMELEON is charging less than six dollars upfront and still nearly matched it. That's not a fluke. That's volume.

tip
Fortnite had dropped to third place in May's PC revenue rankings before bouncing back to the top in June with the launch of Chapter 7 Season 3. MECCHA CHAMELEON's June performance came during that same window.

Forza Horizon 6, which topped May's chart on the back of its launch wave, fell five spots in June once the initial surge settled. The rest of the top 10 saw Marvel Rivals, The Sims 4, and Dead By Daylight enter the rankings, with Dead By Daylight jumping 16 positions off the back of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

What viral actually looks like in practice

The MECCHA CHAMELEON story fits a very specific playbook that the industry has seen play out with Among Us, Lethal Company, R.E.P.O., and Peak. A small game finds its audience through streaming and social sharing, word of mouth does the rest, and suddenly a title that cost a fraction of a AAA game to make is competing directly with the biggest properties in the business on revenue charts.

What makes MECCHA CHAMELEON's run particularly striking is the speed. Most viral indie hits build over weeks or months. This one crossed 2 million sales in its first five days, hit 7 million before the two-week mark, and was at 15 million before the month was out. The momentum never really stalled.

The flip side of that kind of visibility is the inevitable clones. A fast-follow AI ripoff appeared on Steam shortly after the game's breakout, with some regional storefronts even listing it under the same name. It's an annoying but fairly predictable outcome for any game that goes this big this fast.

The player count question and what comes next

One wrinkle in the MECCHA CHAMELEON story is that Roblox clones of the game have reportedly surpassed the original in active player counts within just three weeks of the game's breakout. That's a strange position to be in: your game is generating more revenue than almost any other PC title on the market, but the unofficial versions are pulling larger concurrent audiences on a different platform.

For players already in the game, the community is large enough that finding a full session is straightforward. If you're planning to jump in with friends, checking the Meccha Chameleon multiplayer guide for setting up private rooms and inviting friends is worth a few minutes before you start. The base game ships with 5 maps, and the developers have already teased a Japan-themed map as an upcoming addition, so the content slate is still growing.

GTA 6 is the obvious candidate to knock MECCHA CHAMELEON off its best-selling-game-of-2026 perch once it arrives, but until then, the chameleon is holding its ground. For a $5.99 indie from a solo developer, that's a sentence that would have sounded completely made up six weeks ago.

If you want to get the most out of the game while the playerbase is at its peak, the MECCHA CHAMELEON guides collection covers everything from custom map picks to lobby size limits.
