Christopher Nolan has never done anything small, but a photo posted by an IMAX projectionist this week puts the sheer physical scale of The Odyssey into perspective that no trailer ever could.
The projectionist shared an image of the film reel sitting inside the IMAX console, noting that it contains over 250,000 frames. That works out to more than 11 miles of physical film and approximately 630 lbs in total weight. For context, a standard theatrical film reel runs around 16,000 frames. The Odyssey carries more than 15 times that.
What 630 lbs of film actually looks like
A grizzly bear typically weighs somewhere between 400 and 790 lbs. The Odyssey's IMAX print sits comfortably in that range. That is not a metaphor. That is a real film reel that projectionists physically handle and load into machines.
The frame count also includes the prologue for Dune: Awakening (the theatrical Dune 3 prologue), which is attached to the front of the print, so the runtime is not entirely Odyssey footage. Still, the numbers are staggering regardless.
The runtime constraint that shaped the entire film
Here's the thing: Nolan actually had to keep The Odyssey under three hours specifically because of IMAX's physical limitations. The weight and length of the reel caps out at a point where the projector mechanics simply cannot handle more. The film's runtime is not a creative choice made in an edit suite. It is an engineering boundary set by the machines showing it.
That is a genuinely wild constraint for a filmmaker to work within, and it reframes how you think about every scene that made the final cut.
The customs incident nobody expected
The physical reels also created a logistical headache before The Odyssey even reached theaters. Nolan told Jimmy Fallon that customs agents in Scotland opened all of the IMAX film canisters during transit. Given that each canister is part of a 630-lb, 11-mile print, that is a lot of film to inspect. Fortunately, nothing was damaged.
It is the kind of behind-the-scenes chaos that only happens when you commit fully to shooting on physical IMAX film rather than going digital. Most major productions abandoned that format years ago.
The film itself
The Odyssey adapts Homer's epic poem with Matt Damon as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca trying to find his way home after the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway plays his wife Penelope, Tom Holland plays his son Telemachus, and Benny Safdie appears as Agamemnon. The cast alone signals the scale of ambition here.
