The Ouroboros King: A Chess-Inspired Roguelike with Strategic Depth | TheXboxHub

Free games on the Epic Games Store are always worth a look, but this week's freebie has a genuinely interesting hook. The Ouroboros King, a chess-based roguelike from solo developer Oriol Cosp, is available at no cost right now, and it's the kind of game that rewards anyone with even a passing familiarity with chess.

Not your standard chess match

The first thing to understand about The Ouroboros King is that it doesn't play by the traditional rulebook. You don't start a match with the full 16-piece setup and choose between the London System or the Queen's Gambit. Instead, you select a handful of pieces, place them on the board, and get into it. The win condition also shifts things up: checkmate isn't the goal. You win by either capturing every opposing piece or taking the enemy King directly.

That's a subtle but meaningful change to how you approach every board state. Piece trades that would normally be fine in classical chess suddenly carry different weight when every unit counts toward the win condition.

The pieces that make it interesting

Here's the thing: the custom pieces are where The Ouroboros King earns its replay value. The Reaper, for example, can capture any piece except the King as long as it shares the same coloured square. The Musketeer moves any number of squares vertically or one diagonally, but the real trick is that it snaps back to its starting position after a kill, letting it dart in and out of danger without getting stranded.

Defensive options exist too. The Prince protects your King passively as long as it stays within 3 squares. The Knight can be upgraded into the Pegasus Rider, doubling its area of influence from one hop to two. Each piece opens up different strategic angles, and the game stacks Relics and Items on top of that to keep runs feeling distinct.

tip
The Ouroboros King doesn't include much of a tutorial, so some prior chess knowledge helps. The movement rules for custom pieces are explained in-game, but the altered win condition is something you'll need to figure out on your own.

The Slay the Spire connection

Progression follows a familiar path for roguelike fans. Runs play out across a branching map that looks and functions a lot like Slay the Spire's node structure, with players choosing their route through increasingly difficult encounters. The further you push, the more the enemy compositions shift, meaning a strategy built around one dominant piece will eventually get countered by opponents running the same unit.

That feedback loop is what gives The Ouroboros King legs beyond a single session. Runs are short enough to feel accessible but layered enough to reward experimentation.

How it stacks up against other chess roguelikes

The Ouroboros King isn't the first game to mix chess with roguelike mechanics. Shotgun King and Gambonanza both tried similar concepts with pixel-art aesthetics. What sets The Ouroboros King apart is its visual fidelity to actual chess: the clean board, the simple piece designs, and the overall presentation all sit closer to Chess.com than to a retro indie game. That won't appeal to everyone, but it makes the experience feel grounded in the source material rather than using chess as a loose theme.

Grab it before the window closes

The Ouroboros King is available for free on the Epic Games Store right now. The standard free game rotation typically runs for one week, so you'll want to claim it sooner rather than later to lock it into your library permanently.

If you're in the mood for more deep strategy titles after this, check out our gaming guides for coverage across a wide range of genres. For fans of story-driven RPG games, The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon is another title worth keeping on your radar right now.
