The best Palworld Pals in 1.0 | PC Gamer

Your base is only as good as the Pals running it. That's been true since Palworld launched in early access, but with version 1.0 reshuffling work suitability levels, passive skill interactions, and the overall Pal roster, the meta for base workers has shifted in ways that catch a lot of returning players off guard.

Palworld hit nearly a million concurrent players in its second weekend after the 1.0 launch, and a huge chunk of that playerbase is now pushing into mid-to-late game bases where Pal assignment stops being a suggestion and starts being the entire game. Here's the lowdown on what the community has figured out.

Why your Pal roster matters more than your base layout

A lot of players spend hours perfecting their base footprint, placing buildings in efficient clusters, routing Pals around resource nodes. That work matters, but it's secondary to having the right Pals assigned to the right tasks. A level 4 Mining Pal will clear stone nodes faster than a level 4 Pal with Mining 2, full stop. The key here is understanding that work suitability levels scale non-linearly. The jump from Lv. 3 to Lv. 4 in most work types is dramatically more impactful than the jump from Lv. 1 to Lv. 2.

Palworld 1.0 also expanded the Pal roster significantly, adding new specialists who outperform earlier options at specific jobs. If you built your base workforce before 1.0, some of those workers are now second-tier.

The Pals pulling the most weight right now

For mining and stone work, Astegon remains one of the strongest options in the game with a Mining suitability of Lv. 4. It's not easy to catch, but no other Pal matches its raw output at a rock node. If you're not at the point of catching Astegon yet, Digtoise with Lv. 4 Mining is the go-to mid-game replacement and significantly easier to obtain.

Kindling is where Jormuntide Ignis earns its reputation. Lv. 4 Kindling makes it the fastest furnace operator in the game, and since smelting is almost always a production bottleneck, getting even one Jormuntide Ignis on your Kindling station transforms your metal output. The catch is that it also has Watering at Lv. 2, which means careless Palbox assignments will pull it off the furnace to water crops. Assign it manually.

For handiwork and crafting, Anubis is the answer most players already know. Lv. 4 Handiwork combined with Lv. 3 Mining makes it one of the most versatile base Pals in the game. What most players miss is that Anubis also has Transporting at Lv. 2, which means it will occasionally wander off to move items. That's actually useful in a well-organized base, but worth watching if your crafting queues are backing up.

Planting and harvesting has a clear winner in Lyleen, which brings Lv. 4 Planting. Pair it with a Pal that has high Watering suitability, like Jormuntide at Lv. 4, and your farm essentially runs itself. Lyleen Noct, added in a content update, mirrors this setup and works equally well.

tip
Passive skills matter as much as work suitability. A Pal with the "Serious" passive gains a 20% work speed bonus, while "Artisan" adds 50%. Breeding for these passives on your top base workers will outperform simply catching higher-level wild Pals.

The versatile workers that new players sleep on

Not every base needs a roster of Lv. 4 specialists. Early and mid-game, the value is in Pals that cover multiple suitabilities at a decent level. Wixen brings Kindling Lv. 3 and Handiwork Lv. 3, making it a genuine two-role worker that's available well before you can catch Jormuntide Ignis. Beegarde handles Planting Lv. 3 and Handiwork Lv. 3, filling two production roles without requiring a dedicated slot for each.

Cattiva is the unsung hero of early bases. It covers Handiwork, Gathering, Mining, and Transporting, all at Lv. 1 or Lv. 2, which sounds underwhelming until you realize it never idles. Cattiva will always find something to do, which makes it a reliable filler Pal that keeps the base moving when your specialists are busy.

For lumbering, Warsect at Lv. 3 and Bushi at Lv. 3 are the strongest accessible options before reaching the high-end roster. Lumbering is often neglected compared to mining, but wood consumption in 1.0 is high enough that dedicating at least one Lv. 3 Lumbering Pal pays off quickly.

Building the right team composition

The trap most players fall into is loading their base with high-stat specialists and ignoring transport. A base where mined ore sits at the node because no one is moving it is slower than a base with weaker miners and a dedicated transporter. Univolt at Lv. 3 Transporting and Melpaca at Lv. 3 Transporting are both easy to catch and keep material flow consistent.

A solid 1.0 base composition typically looks like this:

Breeding is the fastest path to getting the best passives onto your top-tier workers. If you're not deep into that system yet, the best breeding combos for Palworld 1.0 cover exactly which pairings produce the most efficient base workers from beginner-accessible catches all the way up to World Tree-level Pals.

For a full breakdown of top Pals sorted by every work suitability category in 1.0, the Palworld best base Pals guide covers each role from Lv. 1 through Lv. 4 specialists and which ones are worth the effort to breed versus catch. Your base efficiency in the late game comes down to those decisions made early.
