ThrowbackThursday: When finding a gem you needed in your inventory was a mini-game on its own. No unique art, no search, no vendor. : r/pathofexile

If you've spent any meaningful time in Path of Exile, you know the socket color grind. You find a perfect chest piece, the stats are exactly what your build needs, and then you notice the sockets are all red when you need blue. The gear sits in your stash forever. That specific frustration is going away.

Grinding Gear Games has confirmed that the upcoming Curse of the Allflame update, launching on July 24, replaces the traditional red, green, and blue socket system with neutral sockets. Any skill gem slots into any socket, full stop.

What the old system actually cost players

The colored socket system has been part of Path of Exile since its earliest days. Strength-based characters needed red sockets, Dexterity builds needed green, Intelligence builds needed blue. Skill gems followed the same color logic, and mismatches meant the gem simply could not be equipped in that slot.

On paper, that sounds like a minor inconvenience. In practice, it created a secondary grind that sat on top of the already demanding item hunt. Players spent Chromatic Orbs (a dedicated in-game currency) rerolling socket colors, sometimes burning through dozens just to get a workable configuration on a single item. For newer players without a deep stash of currency, that cost was genuinely prohibitive.

The knock-on effect was equally frustrating: rare, high-value items would sit unused because a player's gem setup didn't match the socket colors available. Gear that should have been an upgrade became a liability.

How neutral sockets change the calculus

The shift to neutral sockets removes that entire layer of friction. Here's what changes immediately when the update goes live:

  • Chromatic Orbs no longer need to be spent on socket recoloring, freeing that currency for other crafting uses
  • Gear evaluation becomes straightforward: if the item stats are good, the item is usable
  • Early-game players can actually build around the skill gems they find, rather than the socket colors they happen to roll
  • Build experimentation gets cheaper, since swapping a skill setup no longer requires rerolling sockets first
important
Neutral sockets apply to the socket color restriction specifically. The rest of Path of Exile's build complexity, including the passive skill tree, crafting systems, and endgame progression, remains fully intact.

Game designer Octavian noted during developer interviews surrounding the update that he had personally questioned the value of colored sockets for years. Game director Mark Roberts framed the change as a direct response to long-standing player feedback, with the explicit goal of lowering the barrier for new players and reducing friction for returning ones.

What Curse of the Allflame adds beyond socket changes

The socket overhaul is the headline, but it's not the whole update. Curse of the Allflame also brings a new challenge league, additions to endgame content, new crafting systems, and a brand-new Ascendancy class. The QoL changes extend beyond sockets as well, though the socket removal is the most structurally significant shift.

For veteran players worried this signals a broader casualization push, the evidence doesn't support that reading. The passive tree still has hundreds of nodes to navigate. Crafting systems are getting more complex, not simpler. The endgame is expanding. Grinding Gear is removing a friction point that never added meaningful depth, not dismantling the systems that actually define the game.
