Pokémon Legends: Z-A Season 15 Water-Type Ranked Battle Rules

Season 15 of Pokémon Legends: Z-A Ranked Battles launches August 6, restricting teams exclusively to Water-types from both the base game and Mega Dimension DLC.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Season 15 Water-Type Ranked Battle Rules

Each season, Pokémon Legends: Z-A flips its Ranked Battle ruleset hard enough to feel like a different game entirely. Season 13 stripped out all legendary and mythical Pokémon. Season 14 went full sky with a Flying-type-only format. Now Pokémon Legends: Z-A is going deep on Water-types for Season 15, launching August 6 and running through August 27.

Here's the lowdown: your entire team of three must be Water-type Pokémon, drawn from either the base game's Lumiose Pokédex or the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Pokédex. Everything gets normalized to level 50, so raw grinding won't give anyone an edge.

What the Water-type pool actually looks like

The Lumiose Pokédex side of the roster covers the most recognizable faces. The full eligible list includes Totodile, Croconaw, Feraligatr, Magikarp, Gyarados, Binacle, Barbaracle, Staryu, Starmie, Panpour, Simipour, Vaporeon, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Slowking, Carvanha, Sharpedo, Squirtle, Wartortle, Blastoise, Skrelp, Clauncher, Clawitzer, Froakie, Frogadier, and Greninja.

Players with the Mega Dimension DLC get access to a second pool: Rotom Wash, Dondozo, Tatsugiri, Qwilfish (regular form only), Mudkip, Marshtomp, Swampert, Feebas, Milotic, Wimpod, Golisopod, Volcanion, Keldeo, and Kyogre.

That last name is worth paying attention to. Kyogre sits in the eligible pool, though Game Freak and The Pokémon Company haven't officially confirmed whether a one-per-team restriction will apply. Given how past seasons have handled powerful legendaries, a limit seems likely, but nothing is locked in yet.

important
Kyogre's eligibility hasn't been officially clarified as of the season announcement. Expect a ruling closer to or at the August 6 launch date.

How this season compares to the last two

The type-restriction format has been building momentum since Season 13, which took the simpler approach of banning legendaries outright. Season 14's Flying-type restriction was the first time the format fully committed to a single-type meta, and the community response was positive enough that Game Freak is running it back with Water-types.

The key difference this time is the sheer depth of the Water-type roster. Flying had its stars (and not much else), but Water brings genuine strategic variety. You have speed-focused options like Greninja, bulk-and-control picks like Slowking, and raw power through Kyogre and Swampert. Mega Evolution will still define the ceiling here, as it does every season, so knowing which stones to prioritize matters as much as team composition.

Rewards and what you're grinding toward

The reward structure mirrors Season 14 closely. Ranking up from Rank Y through Rank S earns you Mega Evolution stones in this order: Greninjite, Delphoxite, Chesnaughtite, Baxcalibrite, Sceptilite, Swampertite, and Blazikenite. Lower ranks still dish out Fresh Water and various Feathers, keeping the grind worthwhile at every tier.

The fact that Swampertite is a mid-tier reward while Swampert itself is eligible to battle is worth noting. Building toward that stone while running a Mudkip line is a clean progression loop for players who haven't picked up the DLC yet.

For anyone still building their roster from scratch, our Pokémon Legends: Z-A best starter Pokémon guide covers the Totodile line in detail, which is one of the stronger Water-type options available in the base game pool.

The broader picture for Legends Z-A's competitive scene

What most players miss about this rotating format is how deliberately it keeps the meta from calcifying. A standard open format would almost certainly be dominated by the same handful of Mega Evolutions every season. By locking each season to a single type, Game Freak forces players to think differently about team building every three weeks.

Season 15 runs until August 27. If you want to sharpen your Water-type picks before the season opens, the Pokémon Legends: Z-A strategy guides collection has everything from Wild Zone spawn locations to shiny tier rankings to help you build the strongest squad possible before the August 6 start.
