Nearly 79,552 players logged into Project Zomboid simultaneously on Steam after Build 42.20 dropped, setting a new all-time concurrent player record for The Indie Stone's zombie survival sim and proving that years in early access is no barrier to a massive audience.

Here's the thing: this is the game's first major build update since 2021. Five years between major content drops, and the community still showed up in record numbers. That says something about the loyalty Project Zomboid has built.

Knox County gets a full architectural identity

The headline change in Build 42.20 is a sweeping overhaul of Knox County itself. Seven towns have been completely rebuilt from the ground up, each given its own distinct architectural style, unique buildings, and properly landscaped surroundings. If you played before this update, familiar streets now look genuinely different, not just touched up.

The map's total surface area has doubled, bringing the tile count to 35,000. That's a significant expansion by any measure, and it comes packed with new locations to discover.

What's actually new to explore

The new and reworked locations are where Build 42.20 gets interesting. The update includes:

  • A fully rebuilt prison, described by The Indie Stone as "entirely new"
  • An abandoned orphanage (exactly as unsettling as it sounds)
  • A boy scout camp
  • 400 procedurally generated basements scattered across the map
  • 75 hand-crafted unique basements for players who prefer their underground spaces with a personal touch

The procedural basement count is the kind of specific detail that tells you a lot about how The Indie Stone thinks about this game. Most developers wouldn't even consider basements a feature worth calling out. Here, there are four hundred of them.

tip
Build 42.20 does not carry over old saves. If you want to see the reworked Knox County, you'll need to start a fresh run.

New mechanics alongside the new map

The map expansion isn't the whole story. Build 42.20 also adds cows and chickens to the game's animal roster, alongside meaningful changes to hunting, trapping, and farming systems. Wilderness survival now has more viable paths than before.

Stealth has been reworked, fishing has been refined, and players can now drag corpses, which sounds minor until you're trying to clear a building quietly and realize how much that changes the cleanup process. These are the kinds of mechanical additions that reward players who already know the game well. For a full breakdown of what changed in the stable release, the Build 42 everything new guide covers it in detail.

The price went up, and players came anyway

The Indie Stone raised Project Zomboid's price from $20 to $25 alongside the update, a 25% increase. That's a notable jump for a game still in early access. The concurrent player record suggests the price hike didn't deter the existing community or curious newcomers, but it's worth knowing before you buy in.

What most players miss in the excitement of a big map drop is what comes next. The Indie Stone has long planned to bring NPC survivors back to Knox County in a future build. Given the gap between major updates, that's likely still a few years out, but it remains the most anticipated feature on the roadmap.

If you're jumping back in or starting for the first time, the Project Zomboid guides collection has everything you need to survive the newly expanded Knox County.
