Pre-release events for Riftbound: League of Legends's fourth booster set, Vendetta, kicked off July 24 at local game stores, with the global release locked in for July 31. More than just new cards, this drop marks the first time the English and Chinese language releases are synced up, which is a bigger deal for competitive players than it might sound.
For context on why that synchronization matters: past staggered releases meant players in delayed regions could study the Chinese meta, identify the strongest decks, and come prepared when their own cards dropped. That edge is gone now. The three new keywords, explained
Flow is the headliner mechanic. Cards with Flow can be played from the discard pile, then are removed from the game entirely after use. The practical upside is that it keeps your options open when your hand runs thin, and it functions as a genuine threat even when opponents are tracking your discard pile. The signature spell Public Execution is a clean example: it kills an opposing unit if it has less might than a chosen friendly unit, and from the discard pile it can be replayed for 5 runes plus a 2-rune recycle before being removed from the game. Pair that with Ambessa The Wolf, who gains +3 might and damage immunity outside of combat when Empowered, and you have a unit that can safely trigger Public Execution while other units push offensively.
Empowered is the second new keyword, and it upgrades cards permanently for as long as they stay on the field. Helm of Suppression shows the ceiling here: in its base form it taxes opposing spell costs by 1 rune, but when Empowered it stacks an additional 1-rune recycle tax on top. Against spell-heavy decks, that is genuinely punishing. Kharox takes Empowered in a wilder direction: when triggered, an opponent Burns 3 cards from the top of their deck, and then the Kharox player can steal one of those discarded units and put it into play for free. Pulling a 10-cost, 10-might Corrupted Dragon out of your opponent's trash is the kind of moment that defines a set's reputation.
Burn rounds out the trio, sending cards from the top of a deck directly to the discard pile. Running out of cards is not a loss condition in Riftbound; instead, it triggers a Burn Out, where the affected player shuffles their trash back into their deck and concedes a point to the opponent. That makes Burn a pressure tool rather than an instant-win button, and it feeds Flow decks by stocking the discard pile. Purple/chaos Legends like Kennen and Zed slot into this most naturally, though red/fury decks can also build toward it given their existing discard synergies.
New Legends with opposing color domains
Vendetta introduces Legends that combine two previously incompatible domains, which opens up deck archetypes that simply did not exist before. The most compelling of the new entries is Akali Rogue Assassin, who runs red/fury and green/calm. The play pattern mirrors kiting in League of Legends: attack with Akali Deadly Weapon to deal ping damage, retreat to base, then swing in again for additional hits. Green/calm cards provide movement and buffs, while red/fury spells add burst damage and attack bonuses. It is a genuinely fresh archetype for the game.
For established top-cut decks, Vendetta adds useful tools without forcing a full rebuild. The Irelia Blade Dancer (purple/chaos and green/calm) deck picks up Twilight Step and Resonating Strike for additional unit movement, plus Akali Silent as a sticky unit that cannot be targeted by spells or abilities outside of combat. The Master Yi, Wuju Bladesman deck has legitimate reasons to look at Gangplank, who becomes increasingly difficult to remove when Empowered, and Renekton, who hits Empowered status once he reaches 10 might. With Master Yi's passive +2 might bonus when defending alone, Renekton is only 4 might away from that threshold.
Diptychs and the collector angle
Vendetta introduces 22 diptych variants, meaning 11 pairs of cards that display a single connected art piece when placed side by side. Each pair depicts a specific rivalry, and the visual payoff is substantial for both players and collectors. These sit alongside the existing overnumbered variants, signature cards, and skin-inspired art. New Crystal Rose variants pull from Wild Rift's art style, adding another distinct visual thread to chase.
