Star Racer for Nintendo Switch - Nintendo Official Site

Star Racer has officially been confirmed for Nintendo Switch, targeting a Q3 2026 release window, and for anyone who has spent the last decade waiting on Nintendo to revive F-Zero, this is about as close as it gets right now.

The game first surfaced on Kickstarter back in November 2023, drawing immediate comparisons to F-Zero and Star Fox for its blend of antigravity speed and aerial combat. A Switch release was listed as a stretch goal at the time. That goal has now been met, and the game is locked in for this year.

What the F-Zero crowd has been waiting for

Here's the thing: F-Zero GX came out in 2003. Nintendo has shown zero urgency in returning to the series, which leaves a real gap in the Switch library for players who want pure, unforgiving high-speed racing. Star Racer is positioning itself directly in that space.

Developed by Crossbridge Studios, the game runs on a mix of grounded and aerial racing, letting players drift and boost across traditional circuits before launching into sky-based sections with aerial combat. The visual style leans hard into that retro F-Zero aesthetic while keeping the controls and features modern enough to feel fresh rather than nostalgic for nostalgia's sake.

The key here is that Star Racer isn't just trading on comparisons. The feature set it's bringing to Switch is genuinely substantial.

Everything packed into the launch build

The confirmed feature list covers a lot of ground:

  • Heart-pounding races across intergalactic tracks with drifting, boosting, and mid-race combat
  • Aerial combat sections where races transition from ground to sky, adding a vertical dimension most racers skip entirely
  • A full track editor that lets players build custom circuits and share them with others
  • Event Races with rotating modifiers, including lava-covered tracks, unexpected obstacles, and precision-based target challenges
  • Local multiplayer for up to 4 players in split-screen

That track editor alone puts it ahead of most F-Zero spiritual successors, which typically stop at replicating the speed without giving players any creative tools.

tip
The soundtrack features contributions from Grant Kirkhope, Mason Lieberman, and Jules Conroy. Kirkhope is best known for his work on Banjo-Kazooie, GoldenEye 007, and Mario + Rabbids.

Grant Kirkhope's involvement changes the vibe entirely

It's easy to overlook the music angle, but Grant Kirkhope brings serious weight to this project. His signature sound, built across decades of beloved Nintendo-adjacent work, gives Star Racer a musical identity that most indie racers simply can't match. If you've ever felt that F-Zero GX's soundtrack was part of what made those races feel electric, Kirkhope's involvement here is worth paying attention to.

Q3 2026 is closer than it sounds

With a Q3 2026 window, Star Racer is likely landing sometime between July and September of this year. No specific date has been announced yet, but the Switch confirmation means it's past the stretch goal phase and into active development for the platform.

For anyone who has been eyeing the indie racing space or just wants something that scratches that F-Zero itch without waiting indefinitely for Nintendo to act, this is the one to watch. You'll want to keep an eye on the eShop listing as the launch window narrows.
