Better Super Mario Sunshine Online | Official Release Trailer (10 player)

A new mod just gave Super Mario Sunshine something Nintendo never did: online multiplayer for up to 10 players.

Better Super Mario Sunshine Online has dropped for the 2002 GameCube platformer, letting you and up to 9 friends tackle Isle Delfino together across every one of the game's 120 Shine Sprites. For a game that's spent two decades as one of the most underappreciated platformer games in Nintendo's catalog, that's a genuinely big deal.

What the mod actually adds

Here's the lowdown on the feature set. The mod syncs Shine Sprite and blue coin progress across all connected players, meaning the notoriously tedious blue coin hunt becomes a shared burden rather than a solo slog. That alone is a quality-of-life win most Sunshine fans have been quietly wishing for since 2002.

Beyond co-op, there's a dedicated 10-player hide and seek mode built to take advantage of Sunshine's movement tech, which remains some of the most expressive in any 3D Mario game. FLUDD hover cancels, spin jumps, and dive slides all carry over, so the competitive side of the mod has genuine depth.

The character roster is where things get interesting. The mod ships with 15 fully custom characters, including Wario, Luigi, Waluigi, and Shadow the Hedgehog, several of whom come with unique custom animations. This isn't a simple palette swap situation. The modding team clearly put real work into making each character feel distinct within Sunshine's engine.

The Sunshine modding scene keeps delivering

What most players miss about Super Mario Sunshine is that its modding community has been quietly active for years. The game's movement system, despite being built on GameCube hardware from 2002, has enough mechanical richness to sustain competitive play and creative mods well past its original lifespan.

Better Super Mario Sunshine Online draws direct inspiration from the multiplayer mods that transformed Super Mario 64 into an online co-op experience. That precedent proved there was real appetite for revisiting classic 3D Mario games with friends, and Sunshine's more structured level design (each world gated around Shine Sprites) actually maps well to shared progression.

The timing is worth noting too. With Super Mario Bros. Wonder having put Nintendo's 2D platformers back in the conversation for co-op design, there's renewed interest in what the older 3D entries could look like with modern multiplayer hooks. The modding community is filling that gap themselves.

tip
Better Super Mario Sunshine Online is available on GameBanana. You'll need a compatible GameCube or Wii emulator setup to run it.

Why this matters beyond nostalgia

Sunshine has always been the divisive middle child of the 3D Mario family, sitting between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy in the chronology and often overshadowed by both. Its original release was reportedly rushed, and it shows in places. But the movement, the music, and the sheer visual personality of Isle Delfino have kept a dedicated fanbase coming back for over two decades.

A 10-player online mod doesn't fix the game's rough edges, but it reframes the experience entirely. Hunting Shine Sprites as a coordinated group, or competing in hide and seek across Bianco Hills and Ricco Harbor, turns a solo platformer into something closer to a party game with serious movement tech underneath.

For fans already deep in Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Wonder guides and looking for something to scratch a different itch, Sunshine with online co-op is worth a serious look. The mod is live now, and the official release trailer on YouTube gives a solid preview of all 15 characters in action.
