Sports Resort - Nintendo Switch ...

Nintendo just dropped Nintendo Switch Sports Resort during its June 2026 Direct, and physical preorders are already live at Amazon before most retailers have even blinked. The game is a Switch 2 exclusive launching on October 22, 2026, and if you want a cartridge in hand, Amazon is currently your only option for a physical copy.

Physical vs. digital: what you'll actually pay

Here's the thing about the pricing. Nintendo has shifted to a model where physical releases cost more than their digital counterparts, and Switch Sports Resort follows that pattern exactly. The physical edition sits at $59.99 at Amazon, while the digital version on the Nintendo eShop is priced at $49.99. That's a $10 premium to own a cartridge, which is now standard practice for Switch 2 titles.

Walmart also has the physical edition listed at the same $59.99 price point, so don't expect to find a cheaper physical option elsewhere. The Nintendo eShop does not currently offer a physical preorder option, and the digital version is available there right now if you'd rather skip the wait.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort requires Joy-Con 2 controllers and is fully incompatible with original Switch hardware. There is no Switch 1 version planned.

13 confirmed sports, with a few notable gaps

Switch Sports Resort draws heavily from the spirit of Wii Sports Resort while adding some fresh activities. The full confirmed lineup from the June Direct includes:

  • Archery
  • Boxing
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball
  • Bowling
  • Basketball
  • Golf
  • Thumb Wrestling
  • Skateboarding
  • Power Cruising
  • Prop Plane
  • Jump Rope

That's 13 activities at launch, with jump rope, skateboarding, and thumb wrestling being new additions that weren't in the original Switch Sports. The game leans on the upgraded Joy-Con 2 motion controls for all of its sports, which is the primary reason it's locked to Switch 2 hardware.

What's missing is worth noting. Soccer, sword dueling, and frisbee, all present in either Wii Sports Resort or Switch Sports, don't appear in the confirmed lineup. Whether those return via future updates hasn't been announced.

A spiritual successor with upgraded hardware demands

Switch Sports Resort is essentially Nintendo's answer to a question fans have been asking since the original Wii Sports Resort landed in 2009: what does this look like with modern hardware? The Joy-Con 2's improved motion sensing is the whole pitch here, and Nintendo is betting that the upgrade is noticeable enough to justify the Switch 2 exclusivity.

The game sits in a long line of Nintendo party titles designed to pull in players who don't typically buy traditional releases. For racing games and more niche genres, Switch 2 has plenty of options, but Switch Sports Resort is clearly targeting the living room crowd that made Wii Sports a cultural moment.

The October 22 launch date gives Nintendo a strong holiday window. Preorders are worth locking in early if you want the physical edition, given how quickly Nintendo hardware bundles and associated titles tend to move during Q4.
