Rhythm Heaven Groove for Nintendo Switch - Nintendo Official Site

Rhythm Heaven Groove producer and composer Mitsuo Terada, known professionally as Tsunku, has revealed that he turned down multiple offers to create rhythm games outside of Nintendo, citing a deep personal sense of indebtedness to the company.

The revelation comes from a blog post published by Tsunku himself, where he explains that many developers who grew up playing the original Rhythm Heaven on DS are now adults working in the games industry. That fanbase translated directly into job offers, with several individuals approaching him to collaborate on spiritual successors or rhythm game projects that would have scratched the same itch.

Why Tsunku kept saying no

Here's the thing: Tsunku didn't just politely decline once. He turned down every single offer that came his way, holding out specifically because he believed Nintendo would eventually come back to the series.

In his own words: "I always believed I would get the opportunity to work with Nintendo on the next Rhythm Heaven, so I politely declined such offers. I'd say it's my way of showing indebtedness to Nintendo for all the support I've received throughout the years."

That kind of loyalty is rare in an industry where studios get acquired, IPs change hands, and creators frequently move between publishers. Tsunku essentially put his career on hold for a series that had gone quiet for years, betting that Nintendo would return to it.

The bet paid off. Rhythm Heaven Groove is now out on Nintendo Switch.

The illness that made Nintendo's support mean even more

Tsunku's gratitude toward Nintendo isn't just professional courtesy. It runs much deeper than that, rooted in one of the harder chapters of his life.

Back in 2014, Tsunku was battling laryngeal cancer. Despite his illness, Nintendo pushed forward with development on Rhythm Heaven Megamix for 3DS and never paused production. Tsunku says that decision became a personal beacon of hope for him during treatment.

"The fact that Nintendo never halted development and kept working on the game ahead of its release became one of my beacons of hope. It's what helped me gain the courage to tell myself, 'You can do this!'"

What makes that story even heavier is what Tsunku learned afterward. Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's late CEO, was also seriously ill during that same period. Iwata passed away in July 2015. Tsunku acknowledged this in his post, extending his condolences once again.

"What I later learned was that Nintendo's CEO Satoru Iwata had also been battling an illness around that same period... Once again, I extend my deepest condolences."

Two people fighting serious illnesses at the same time, both quietly pushing a rhythm game forward. That context reframes Rhythm Heaven Megamix as something more personal than most players ever knew.

What this means for the series going forward

The key here is that Tsunku's patience produced a result. Rhythm Heaven Groove exists because he held the line, and the series now has a proper new entry on Switch rather than a scattered collection of independent spiritual successors developed elsewhere.

For fans who waited years between Megamix in 2016 and this release, that loyalty turned out to matter. A demo for Rhythm Heaven Groove is currently available if you haven't tried it yet.
