3 years on from laying off over 1,000 people, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast are sending daily emails and physical letters encouraging the survivors to not unionise | PC Gamer

John Hight, the president of Wizards of the Coast, is leaving the company after just two years in the role. A US Securities and Exchange Commission filing dated July 27 confirmed that Hight and Hasbro reached a "Transitional Advisory Services Agreement," with his last day as president set for September 1. After that, he'll spend up to a year as an advisor to the CEO, provided he isn't terminated before the arrangement runs its course.

A short tenure with a complicated backdrop

Hight joined Wizards of the Coast in August 2024, just two months after wrapping up nearly 13 years at Blizzard Entertainment, where he served as general manager of the Warcraft franchise. His mandate at Wizards was broad: overseeing all publishing and development for Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and Hasbro's wider digital gaming portfolio, including original and licensed videogames built on Hasbro's broader brand catalog.

Two years is a short run for a role that size. The timing of the announcement makes the context hard to ignore.

The $56 million shadow hanging over this departure

Just one week before Hight's exit was confirmed, Hasbro recorded a $56 million impairment charge tied to the cancellation of multiple videogame projects that had been scheduled to release in 2028 and beyond. One confirmed cancellation is the D&D game that was in development at Giant Skull, the studio founded by Stig Asmussen, the director behind Jedi: Fallen Order. A high-budget GI Joe game announced back in 2021 has also been reported as troubled, though Hasbro previously stated it had not been officially cancelled.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks framed 2026 as the company's "peak year for digital investment" while simultaneously flagging plans to cut digital spending by at least 25% by 2028. That's a meaningful pullback, and Hight's job description sat squarely in the middle of that digital ambition. Here's the thing: when a company starts trimming its videogame investment roadmap at that scale, the executive whose entire role centers on that investment tends to feel the pressure first.

important
Hasbro's planned 25% reduction in digital spend by 2028 signals a structural shift away from big-budget original game development, not just a one-off project cancellation.

What Wizards says about the transition

In a statement, Wizards of the Coast said it is "deeply grateful" for Hight's contributions and confirmed he will continue in an advisory capacity "while pursuing other creative and professional opportunities he's passionate about." The company was quick to add that the core business remains healthy, pointing to strong ongoing performance from both Magic: The Gathering and D&D. The 2027 videogame slate, which includes Exodus and Warlock, was specifically called out as still on track.

Wizards is now running both an internal and external search for Hight's replacement.

What this means for players and the games pipeline

For fans of D&D and Magic: The Gathering as tabletop products, the official line holds: nothing changes. Both properties are performing well by Hasbro's own metrics, and the tabletop side of the business isn't what's being restructured here.

The videogame side is a different story. The cancellation of Giant Skull's D&D project was a genuine blow for anyone hoping to see the franchise translated into a prestige action-RPG. With Hasbro pulling back on long-term digital investment and a leadership gap now opening at the top of Wizards, the pipeline of original games built on Hasbro IP looks thinner than it did even six months ago.

What most players miss is that Hasbro still has licensed game deals that don't carry the same development cost risk as internally shepherded projects. Baldur's Gate 3 remains the benchmark Hasbro keeps pointing to publicly, and Larian Studios built that without Hasbro funding the development directly. That model, where a third-party studio takes on the creative and financial risk while Hasbro licenses the IP, may be where the company's digital strategy lands after this reset.
