Wargaming has officially launched the Born to Sail Free update for World of Warships: Legends, and it's one of the bigger content drops the game has seen in a while. Timed to mark the 250th anniversary of American Independence Day, the July update runs from June 29 through August 3 and packs in a new campaign, a fresh line of U.S. alternative destroyers, event currency, Commander rewards, and a Legendary tier ship to chase.
Four new destroyers with a twist
The headline addition is a brand new line of four U.S. alternative destroyers arriving in Early Access: Tier V Kane, Tier VI Hughes, Tier VII Osborne, and Tier VIII Christopher. What makes them worth paying attention to is Advanced Radar, a passive ability that periodically reveals enemy positions on the minimap when targets are within range, even if those ships haven't been spotted through normal detection. That's a meaningful intel advantage in competitive play.
Here's the thing: these ships aren't just interesting on paper. A destroyer that can passively ping enemy locations changes how you approach positioning and map awareness, especially in the 2v2 Ranked formats this update also introduces.
You can find them through U.S. Alternative Destroyer Crates and the Steel Eagles random bundle. That bundle also has a chance to drop the Tier VIII Premium cruiser Cambridge, so there's extra value in pulling from it.
The Pacific Hammer campaign and battleship Indiana
Running the full length of the update, the Pacific Hammer campaign asks players to complete 100 milestones across five weeks. The final prize for anyone who finishes with active Admiralty Backing is Indiana, a U.S. Tier VIII Premium battleship based on the historical South Dakota-class. She fought across the Pacific War and brings that history into the game with powerful secondary guns and a flexible consumable loadout: Repair Party, Sonar, and a choice between Enhanced Secondary Targeting, Observation Seaplane, and Catapult Fighter.

The total value of the full reward track with Admiralty Backing is listed at 78,300 doubloons. That's a significant return on the 2,500 doubloon investment if you're going to play through July anyway.
Pro tip: War Tales count toward campaign and calendar challenges this update, so you can grind milestones in your preferred mode rather than forcing yourself into standard battles.
The U.S.A. 250 event and what Independium buys you
The broader U.S.A. 250 event ties everything together through a dedicated event currency called Independium. Earn it across the campaign, the Big Chief Calendar, and various missions, then spend it on:
- USS Burrows (Legendary tier destroyer)
- Historical skins inspired by different periods of American naval history
- Cosmetics for the new Early Access destroyers
The Big Chief Calendar runs for three weeks and rewards Commander Ernest E. Evans, a new Commander whose skillset is specifically built for the U.S. alternative destroyer line. Three additional Commander guises based on notable U.S. Navy figures from different historical eras come alongside him. You can miss up to 3 days and still unlock everything for free.
Separately, the Three Eras of Freedom Collection covers three chapters of U.S. maritime history: the Age of Sail, the Great White Fleet era, and the World Wars era. Complete it and you'll receive USS Tracy, a U.S. Tier III Premium destroyer, plus more Alt. Destroyer crates and Commander Progression Items.
What else shipped in Born to Sail Free
The Independence Day content is the obvious focus, but the update has more running underneath it. Three new seasons of Ranked Battles (Seasons 104, 105, and 106) bring back 2v2 engagements across Tier VI, VII, and VIII ships respectively, each running for one week in July. The Star Trek x Legends collaboration also returns from July 6 through August 3, bringing back ships like the U.S.S. Voyager and Commanders including Spock, Picard, and Janeway.
Balance changes are also part of the package, with buffs hitting a range of destroyers including Fletcher, Halland, and Småland, plus high-tier Pan-American cruisers. On the nerf side, several Dutch ships including Kijkduin, Eendracht, and Haarlem take hits. PS5 players get something extra: DualSense adaptive trigger support is now in the game, with controls changing feedback based on whether you're firing main guns, launching torpedoes, or dropping aircraft. It's disabled by default, so you'll need to enable it in Settings.
With four new ships, a 100-milestone campaign, a Legendary tier destroyer to earn, and a full Independence Day event all running simultaneously, Born to Sail Free is exactly the kind of update that makes July worth logging in for.
