Yoko Taro Saddened by Loss of Physical Media in Gaming

Yoko Taro, the director behind NieR:Automata, has publicly expressed his sadness over the death of physical game media, reacting to PlayStation's announcement that it will end disc production for new games in 2028.

What Yoko Taro actually said

Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on July 19, 2026, Yoko shared a photo of his physical copy of Hi-Fi Rush before expanding on his feelings about where the industry is heading. The post, originally written in Japanese, translates to a sentiment that is equal parts resigned and genuinely disappointed.

"Personally, I'm saddened by the loss of physical media, but that's just the way things are going," Yoko wrote. He went on to explain that he had expected physical releases to survive in some form, even if only as expensive limited editions, drawing a parallel to how the music industry still sells premium CD releases despite streaming dominance.

"As keeping control of physical distribution has its advantages compared to just releasing games on Steam etc, I thought that in the future, even if digital game downloads were pushed, there would still be expensive limited editions (like what we see with CDs). Seems I was wrong," he continued.

Here's the thing: that prediction was not unreasonable. Premium physical editions have been a reliable revenue stream for publishers for years, and the idea that Sony would walk away from that entirely came as a surprise to a lot of people inside the industry, not just fans.

Nintendo's Game-Key Cards drew his frustration too

Yoko did not stop at PlayStation. He also took aim at Nintendo's Game-Key Cards, the Switch 2 solution that looks like a cartridge but actually just unlocks a digital download when inserted. The format has been a point of contention since Nintendo started shipping certain titles with them.

"Switch 2 keycards are more confusing than normal ROMs," Yoko said. "And they're specified with a huge label on the cover of the box like 'THIS IS A KEY CARD.' I guess that's just the future..."

The frustration is understandable. Game-Key Cards offer the shelf presence of a physical product without any of its actual benefits. You still need an internet connection to download the game, and if the servers ever go offline, that card becomes useless.

important
Game-Key Cards do not store game data locally. If Nintendo's download servers become unavailable in the future, games tied to these cards may no longer be accessible.

A growing chorus from game developers

Yoko Taro is not alone in voicing these concerns. Hideo Kojima has also spoken publicly about his unease with PlayStation's disc decision, warning about a future where players no longer truly own the data they purchase. Developers and publishers connected to titles like Baldur's Gate 3 have called Sony's move "heartbreaking."

What most players miss in this conversation is the long-term preservation angle. Physical discs and cartridges have historically been the most reliable way to keep older games playable decades after their original release. A digital-only future places that responsibility entirely in the hands of platform holders, who have little financial incentive to maintain servers for games that stopped selling years ago.

Sony cited a "general preference for digital media" that "significantly outpaces physical discs" as the justification for the 2028 cutoff. The numbers may support that reasoning from a sales perspective, but the creative community clearly feels something meaningful is being lost in the process.

For fans of JRPG games and action titles like NieR:Automata, where collector's editions and physical releases have historically been a big part of the fandom experience, the shift stings a little harder than it might for other genres.
