Most players assume dunking in Practical Basketball on Roblox is just a matter of running toward the hoop and hammering a button. That works maybe half the time, and the other half you get a layup animation or a blocked attempt and no idea why. There are actually four distinct dunk types in the game, each with its own input, positioning requirement, and timing window. Get those right and you stop leaving easy points on the floor.
How to perform every dunk type in Practical Basketball
The tutorial only covers the Standing Dunk, which gives a lot of players the impression that's the only option. There are four total, and each one fits a different game situation.
Standing dunk
- Input: Hold Space
- When to use: When you're stationary or barely moving directly beneath the basket
This is the most straightforward of the four. Position yourself inside the paint, close to the rim, hold Space, and release the timing meter when it lands in the green zone. The catch is distance: try it from a few steps out or while still carrying full running speed and the game will swap you into a different animation entirely. Think of it as a close-range, low-chaos option when you have a clean catch under the hoop.

Driving dunk approach angle
Driving dunk
- Input: Shift + Space
- When to use: While sprinting toward the basket with forward momentum
The Driving Dunk is your go-to when attacking the rim off a fast break or off-ball cut. Start the sprint just outside the restricted area and press Shift + Space as you close in on the basket. Release the timing meter in the green zone to finish.
Two things kill this attempt consistently: approaching from a bad angle and running directly into a packed paint. If there are multiple defenders set in position, the game almost always resolves it as a layup or a block. Attack from the side or with a clear lane for the best results.
Self lob dunk
- Input: F to throw the self lob, then Shift + Space or Space after catching
- When to use: When you have an open lane and want a flashier finish
The Self Lob Dunk is the highest-risk, highest-reward move in the game. Press F to launch the ball ahead of yourself, then trigger the dunk input as you catch it near the rim. Timing the catch is the hard part: too early or too late and you either miss the ball completely or fumble the finish into a turnover.
Avoid attempting this in traffic. Even one defender near the lane makes the catch window unreliable. Save it for fast breaks where the lane is genuinely open.
Contact dunk
- Input: Shift + Space (same as Driving Dunk)
- When to use: When attacking a defender who is off balance or out of position
The Contact Dunk isn't a separate button combination. It's a special animation that can trigger during a Driving Dunk when you hit the right conditions: enough sprint momentum and a defender who isn't fully set. You don't control when it fires, but you can set it up by attacking the basket aggressively rather than hesitating at the edge of the paint.
Driving straight into a planted rim protector will almost never produce a Contact Dunk. You need the defender caught mid-rotation or retreating.

Standing dunk positioning
Why does my dunk keep turning into a layup?
This is the most common frustration in Practical Basketball, and it almost always comes down to one of four causes:
- You pressed E instead of Space or Shift + Space
- Your approach angle was too sharp or too direct into defenders
- You didn't have enough sprint momentum for a Driving Dunk
- You released the timing meter outside the green zone
The E key issue trips up more players than anything else. It's wired to layups unconditionally, so muscle memory from other games can cost you points constantly until you retrain the habit.
Can every build perform dunks?
Most builds can dunk in the right situation, but not equally. Taller builds with higher finishing attributes get cleaner animations more often and are less likely to have a dunk attempt downgraded to a layup by the game engine. Shorter builds can still dunk but need better positioning and momentum to make it happen.

Positioning habits that make every dunk more consistent
Beyond the button inputs, positioning is what separates players who dunk reliably from those who get layups all game. A few habits worth building:
- Attack from an angle: Straight-line drives into the paint are easy for defenders to read and easy for the game to downgrade. Come from the wing or off a cut.
- Build momentum before the input: For Driving and Contact Dunks, your sprint needs to be at full speed before you press the input. Starting the sprint inside the restricted area is almost always too late.
- Don't hesitate at the rim: Slowing down right before the basket kills the momentum check the game uses to determine your finish type. Commit to the move.
- Use the Standing Dunk after a catch: If you receive a pass directly under the basket, the Standing Dunk is your cleanest option. You're already in position and have no momentum to manage.
