Pokémon Diamond & Pearl: 100+ Scrapped Designs Leaked

A lost Game Freak documentary made during the development of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl has surfaced after 20 years, and the Pokémon community is going through it with a fine-toothed comb. The film was originally distributed to Game Freak employees on DVDs as an internal record of their work, with staff sworn to secrecy. Now it's out, and it's carrying more than 100 previously unseen Pokémon designs with it. If you're curious what this means for the upcoming Pokémon Winds and Waves, there's actually a direct connection worth paying attention to.

What the documentary actually contains

The film runs for almost an hour and was shot inside Game Freak's offices during the Diamond and Pearl development period. It captures employees working, sketching, and yes, goofing around, alongside the full design process for the Sinnoh region. That process goes from rough pencil sketches through paper maps all the way to physical block models of the region's geography. It's the kind of behind-the-scenes material that Game Freak would almost certainly never greenlight today.

Here's the thing: the documentary wasn't meant to be a leak vehicle. It was a keepsake for staff. That's exactly why the footage is so unfiltered, and why what it shows is so significant.

The cut Pokémon that have fans talking

The sheer variety of scrapped designs is what makes this such a big deal. Among the confirmed cut content:

  • A Delibird evolution and a Kecleon evolution, both discarded before the final game shipped
  • Pre-evolutions for Stantler and Lapras
  • What appears to be a baby form shared by Plusle and Minun
  • Entirely new creatures based on cranes, crickets, snails, molluscs, goats, mice, a platypus, and a swordfish
  • Plant-based designs including beansprouts and clover
  • Alternate starter Pokémon, including a foam-headed Water-type dog and a Grass-type wolf

That last one is going to sting for some players. Alternate starters represent some of the most speculative fan territory in the franchise, and seeing actual design work for a Sinnoh region that could have been is genuinely fascinating.

tip
Two designs in the documentary bear a strong resemblance to Rowlet and Sandygast, both of which were eventually released years later in Sun and Moon. Cut designs don't always stay cut forever.

The yellow Shellos detail that points forward

Among all the scrapped creatures, one design is getting particular attention: a yellow Shellos. The standard West Sea and East Sea Shellos variants are pink and blue respectively, so a yellow form is something entirely new. What makes this more than idle curiosity is that a yellow Shellos was apparently referenced in Pokémon Pokopia earlier this year, and fans have been expecting it to appear in next year's Pokémon Winds and Waves for Switch 2. Seeing a design that matches those expectations turn up in an 18-year-old internal documentary is a remarkable data point.

New Pokémon generations have a documented history of revisiting and finishing designs that were previously shelved. The documentary makes that pipeline feel less like fan theory and more like standard practice at Game Freak.

How this compares to other major Pokémon leaks

The only recent event that comes close to this in scale is the Pokémon Teraleak, which originated from an illegal hack of Game Freak's internal servers. That leak was controversial for obvious reasons. This documentary is different: it's a piece of gaming history that employees were given legitimately, and it's now been preserved and catalogued by fans who clearly care about the franchise's development history.

Game Freak operates with more secrecy around its design process than almost any other major developer. Moments like this, where the curtain actually pulls back on how a beloved generation came together, are genuinely rare.

Why this moment matters for Pokémon history

For the Diamond and Pearl generation specifically, this documentary reframes what the Sinnoh games could have been. The finished product is beloved, but seeing the alternate paths, the creatures that almost made it, the evolutions that were started and abandoned, adds real texture to the history of those games.

The full documentary is currently available on YouTube and archived more permanently via the Internet Archive. The fan archive at Lewtwo has catalogued the most significant design discoveries for anyone wanting the organized breakdown without sitting through the full film.

For players who want to stay current on everything connecting the Sinnoh legacy to what's coming next, the gaming guides hub is worth bookmarking as Pokémon Winds and Waves coverage ramps up heading into next year.
