Pokémon Pokopia Bubbly Basin DLC drops August 5 with Version 2.0.0

The timing could not be tighter. With Bubbly Basin set to surface on Switch 2 tomorrow, August 5, a fresh preview from Japanese publication Famitsu has filled in several details about what players can actually expect from Pokémon Pokopia's first major expansion, and the free Version 2.0.0 update that ships alongside it.

The expansion has been on the radar since the Bubbly Basin release date was locked in last month, but the Famitsu preview is the first time specific mechanical details have come through ahead of launch.

What the underwater world actually looks like

Pokémon Pokopia has always leaned into its building-sandbox DNA, and Bubbly Basin extends that logic below the waterline. The DLC is predominantly underwater, though it does include some surface-level areas as well. A dedicated new Pokédex covers the region, with confirmed additions including Wiglett, Mareanie, Golisopod, Stunfisk, and Sharpedo.

Here's the thing: the underwater setting is not just cosmetic. Several abilities work below the surface, including Rollout, Rototiller, Rock Smash, and Leafage. Dive will be made available to all players for free, and Surf is getting an upgrade that adds a speed boost and the ability to destroy underwater blocks. That last part matters a lot for anyone who has spent time clearing terrain in the base game.

Version 2.0.0 changes every player will feel

The free update is where things get interesting for players who are not picking up the Expansion Pass. Version 2.0.0 introduces frameless glass, letting you place glass without any frame attached. It is a small quality-of-life addition that builders have wanted for a while.

The bigger addition is the shared storage unit. This is a craftable item that lets you access your items across multiple towns and locations, provided each spot has one of these units placed. The preview build showed up to 140 item slots on the unit, which is a meaningful jump for anyone juggling resources across different builds.

A new item that generates electricity underwater also arrives with the update, though full details on crafting requirements are still sparse ahead of launch.

tip
The shared storage unit is part of the free Version 2.0.0 update, not the paid Expansion Pass. All players get it on August 5.

The bigger picture: three parts, one pass

Bubbly Basin is labeled Part 1 of a three-part expansion. The full Expansion Pass is priced at $34.99 and covers all three waves. Part 2 is slated for late 2026, with Part 3 arriving sometime in 2027. The roadmap is not unusual for this type of game, but the spacing between waves means players will be sitting with Bubbly Basin content for several months before the next drop.

For anyone who wants a deeper look at what the base game offers before committing to the pass, our in-depth review of Pokémon Pokopia breaks down why it earned its reputation as one of the stronger Switch 2 launches.

Bubbly Basin goes live August 5 alongside Version 2.0.0. For exact unlock times and a breakdown of all confirmed Wave 1 content, the Bubbly Basin DLC release date and start times guide has everything you need before the servers go live.
