"Now is the mighty hour come."
That's Sauron speaking in the first full trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3, and the line lands exactly as heavy as it should. The trailer dropped during San Diego Comic-Con 2026 and it does not waste a second getting to the point: the Dark Lord is at Mount Doom, and the One Ring is being made.
The trailer that Middle-earth fans have been waiting for
The footage opens at Mount Doom and barely looks away. Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion, and the official synopsis makes the stakes clear: Sauron's armies have swept across Middle-earth, leaving only a handful of holdouts standing between the Dark Lord and total domination. Khazad-dûm remains sealed, while Lindon and Rivendell survive behind the protection of their Three Rings. Everything else is already his.
The trailer threads the forging of the One Ring through everything else happening on screen. Celeborn and Galadriel reunite. Gandalf delivers a warning about death to come. Epic battles play out across what's left of the free world. And over all of it, Sauron's voice: "The shadow rises in Middle-earth, how would you like to rise with it?"
Here's the thing: the show spent two seasons building to this exact moment, and the trailer makes a strong case that season 3 is where the series fully commits to its source material's darkest chapter.
New cast members and one very surprising voice
The SDCC panel brought major casting news alongside the trailer. Three new characters are joining the roster this season:
- Eddie Marsan as Thrain, older brother to King Durin IV
- Andrew Richardson as Anarion, son of Elendil and brother to Isildur
- Adam Young as Marnûkh, described as "a mysterious Orc who may not be what he seems"
But the casting reveal that genuinely caught people off guard: the Balrog is returning, and for the first time in the show's run, it will speak. The voice belongs to Simon Pegg.
That's a choice worth sitting with for a moment. Pegg brings a specific kind of weight and range to voice work, and a speaking Balrog is something the show's earlier seasons never attempted. What most players miss in fantasy adaptations is how much voice casting shapes the emotional register of a non-human character. Pegg voicing a Balrog is either going to be one of the season's best decisions or its most debated one.
What the season actually covers
The official synopsis fills in the broader picture. Season 3 picks up five years after Eregion's fall, with Sauron now operating from his newly completed tower of Barad-dûr, pouring everything into completing the One Ring. The free peoples of Middle-earth, Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Wizards, have to find a way to unite before he finishes it.
That's the War of the Last Alliance in the making. The show has been building toward this since episode one, and season 3 appears to be the payoff.
Gandalf actor Daniel Weyman has said publicly that his character will finally be "the wizard we all hopefully know and love" this season, which suggests the show is done with the slow-burn mystery arc that defined his earlier appearances.

Four episodes at launch is a generous opening, and the staggered release keeps the conversation going across three consecutive weeks. The key here is that the show is giving itself room to breathe rather than dumping everything at once.
