Spider-Man just rewrote the record books. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $354.8 million domestically and $927 million worldwide this past weekend, landing it as the second-biggest opening in cinema history. The only film still ahead of it? Avengers: Endgame. And by just $2.3 million.

For fans of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PlayStation 5, this is the kind of cultural moment that confirms Peter Parker is operating at a different altitude from every other superhero right now. The web-slinger isn't just a gaming icon. He's the biggest draw in entertainment.

$2.3 million away from the biggest opening ever

The numbers here are almost hard to process. Avengers: Endgame held the domestic opening weekend record at $357.1 million. Brand New Day landed at $354.8 million. That gap is essentially a rounding error at this scale, and final Monday figures could still close it.

What makes this even more striking is the opening day performance. Brand New Day pulled in $168 million on its first day including previews, beating Endgame's $157.4 million opening day. The film already has the best single-day debut ever recorded. The weekend total just barely missed matching that energy across all three days.

Worldwide, the gap is more pronounced. Endgame opened to $1.223 billion globally compared to Brand New Day's $927 million. But for a Spider-Man film, a character whose appeal has historically skewed more domestic than international blockbusters like Avengers, $927 million in a single weekend is genuinely historic.

How No Way Home set the stage for this

Here's the thing: this result didn't come out of nowhere. Spider-Man: No Way Home posted a $260.1 million opening in December 2021, during a period when the previous biggest opening was just $90 million. That film essentially rebooted audience confidence in going back to theaters after the pandemic, and it did it on the back of Peter Parker nostalgia.

Brand New Day is the payoff on everything No Way Home rebuilt. Tom Holland is having a summer that very few actors can claim, and the Spider-Man franchise has now proven twice in five years that it operates by different rules than the rest of the superhero genre. Comic book fatigue may be real for secondary characters, but not here.

Final Monday numbers could push Brand New Day past Avengers: Endgame's domestic opening weekend record of $357.1 million. The margin is just $2.3 million.

The rest of the box office in context

The scale of Brand New Day's opening becomes even clearer when you look at what it did to the rest of the top 10. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which had been on a historic run of its own, dropped to second place with $51 million in its third weekend. That's still the 16th-best third weekend ever, and the film has now crossed $395.5 million domestically after 17 days. Under normal circumstances, that would be the story of the weekend.

Toy Story 5 sits at $461.7 million domestically after seven weekends, now the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. Minions & Monsters has crossed $449 million worldwide on an $85 million budget. It's a genuinely loaded summer, and Brand New Day just dropped into the middle of it like a wrecking ball.

What this means for the Spider-Man franchise going forward

The key here is what Brand New Day's performance signals about where the MCU stands. Sony and Marvel have now produced a film that threatens the all-time opening weekend record held by the single biggest superhero ensemble ever assembled. With a single character.

For players deep into Marvel's Spider-Man 2 guides and lore, the broader cultural appetite for Spider-Man content across every medium is clearly at an all-time high. Insomniac's version of Peter Parker and Miles Morales has been part of building that appetite, giving players a version of this universe to inhabit between films.

The film's momentum heading into its second weekend will be the real test. Endgame famously held its audience across multiple weeks. If Brand New Day shows similar legs, a $500 million domestic run is not just possible, it's probable.

Monday's final numbers are worth watching closely. A $2.3 million gap over three days is nothing. The record may already be gone by the time the final count lands.
