Top Game Releases for August

The games market in August 2025 showed a strong mix of remakes, new entries from established franchises, and independent releases. Sales trends during the month were influenced both by nostalgia-driven remasters and the steady demand for smaller experimental titles. Across Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, different audiences highlighted varied preferences, with AAA franchises maintaining dominance while indies secured meaningful positions.

New Releases on Steam

Steam's top-performing new titles in August were led by remakes and remasters. Titan Quest II was the best-selling new game of the month with 430,000 units, followed closely by Mafia: The Old Country at 430,000 units, and Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War with 376,000 units. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater also had a strong showing, selling 240,000 units. Mafia's performance was supported by more than 700,000 additional units sold on consoles, although its profitability will likely depend on sustained long-term sales.

Independent titles made a noticeable impact in August. Abyssus, a cooperative roguelite set in a brinepunk setting, sold more than 150,000 units and secured a place in the top five. Logic-based puzzler Is This Seat Taken? and the simulation title Tiny Bookshop both surpassed 100,000 units, performing particularly well on both Steam and Switch. Other entries in the top ten included two inexpensive stickman fighting titles and autobattler The Bazaar, which transitioned from a free-to-play launch to a paid release, achieving 110,000 units sold.

Steam Revenue Rankings

When sales were measured by gross revenue, higher-priced titles gained an advantage. Mafia: The Old Country led with $18.8 million, followed by Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater at $15 million. Titan Quest II also remained near the top, consistent with its strong unit sales. A notable entry was Super Robot Wars Y, which generated $4.3 million in revenue. Its higher price range, ranging from $60 to $120 in the United States, contributed to its success, particularly in Asian markets.

Not all established franchises found immediate success. Gears of War Reloaded only sold around 55,000 units on Steam, generating $2 million, which was limited by competition from previous remasters and the absence of split-screen multiplayer. Madden NFL 26 also had a modest presence on PC, ranking seventh in revenue with $3.4 million.

Ongoing Hits and Pre-Orders on Steam

August was also shaped by continuing successes and pre-order momentum. Peak, an $8 cooperative mountaineering title, continued its rapid growth by selling 3.7 million units in a single month. Mage Arena, a $3 cooperative game, added 1.2 million units, highlighting the appeal of low-cost, accessible multiplayer experiences. Cyberpunk 2077 benefited from a 65 percent discount, adding more than 800,000 units.

Battlefield titles were also prominent, with Battlefield 2042 selling 775,000 units through heavy discounts and Battlefield 6 pre-orders reaching 750,000 units ahead of its October launch. Helldivers II recorded 580,000 units on Steam, driven by a Halo ODST crossover and a coordinated release on Xbox. Grounded 2, which launched at the end of July, sold 510,000 units in August on Steam, with more than 4 million players across platforms when including Xbox Game Pass users.

Steam's Top-Grossing Free-to-Play

Free-to-play titles continued to dominate overall revenue on Steam. Counter-Strike 2 generated $155 million in August, while PUBG followed with $57 million. Battlefield 6 pre-orders placed the title in third, with Apex Legends and Marvel Rivals also generating significant revenue at $23.5 million and $22.5 million respectively. Umamusume: Pretty Derby, a character-based racing title, also entered the top ten with $13.6 million.

Console Market Performance

On PlayStation and Xbox, Madden NFL 26 led sales with 1.1 million units sold on each platform, supported by strong performance in the United States, which accounted for 95 percent of sales. On PlayStation, Mafia: The Old Country sold 620,000 units, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater reached 310,000, and Gears of War Reloaded achieved 300,000 units with favorable player ratings. Helldivers II had a successful debut on Xbox, selling more than 500,000 units within five days of release, complementing its earlier success of 12.7 million units on Steam and 4.8 million on PlayStation.

The Switch eShop highlighted opportunities for independent developers. Tiny Bookshop sold more than 200,000 units and became the top new release of the month. Other titles, including Is This Seat Taken? and Discounty, found traction among players. Larger releases included the Switch 2 upgrade of Kirby & The Forgotten Land and the Switch 2-exclusive version of Madden NFL 26, although most other new releases on the platform sold fewer than 100,000 units.
