Wolverine's Free SDCC Claws Are Already Selling for Up to $170

San Diego Comic-Con is barely underway and the scalpers have already done their thing. Insomniac Games handed out free plastic Wolverine claw accessories at the Marvel booth as part of its Marvel's Wolverine promotional push at SDCC, and within hours those same freebie items started appearing on eBay for prices that genuinely hurt to look at.

Free swag that costs more than the actual game

The claws themselves are cheap plastic props, the kind of thing you'd expect to find at a party supply store. PlayStation Blog confirmed the giveaway ahead of the event, noting fans could visit the Marvel booth, grab the claws alongside a Wolverine prequel comic, take a photo op, and even grab a Madripoor Sunrise Slushie. Standard convention stuff. Fun, low-cost, limited supply.

That last part is the key here. The blog post specified the claws were available "while supplies last," which was basically a starter pistol for resellers.

The lowest current eBay listing for the SDCC Wolverine claws sits at $80, which happens to match the retail price of Marvel's Wolverine itself. At least 3 of those have already sold. From there the prices climb fast, with most listings sitting above $90 and the highest asking price reaching $175. A handful of those pricier listings include the prequel comic as a bundle, but that doesn't make the math any less absurd.

tip
Marvel's Wolverine launches September 15, 2026, exclusively on PS5. The SDCC claws were a free convention giveaway, not a retail product.

Why a nothing giveaway becomes a $170 collectible

This isn't a unique situation. Convention exclusives have always attracted resellers, but the speed at which these flipped is worth noting. The SDCC panel featuring Marvel's Wolverine dropped a new trailer revealing Jean Grey as a love interest for Logan, which pushed the game's hype to a new level. That attention feeds directly into the perceived value of anything Wolverine-adjacent at the show.

Here's the thing: the claws aren't special. They're promotional plastic props. The value is entirely manufactured by scarcity and timing, not by the quality of the item. The people paying $90-plus for these aren't getting anything you couldn't replicate with a trip to a craft store.

What most players miss is that this pattern repeats constantly with gaming event merch. It's the same reason limited-run convention badges, demo tokens, and booth-exclusive pins end up on secondary markets at multiples of their actual worth. The moment something is described as a limited giveaway at a major event, the clock starts.

What this means for gamers heading to SDCC

If you're at San Diego Comic-Con right now, the Marvel booth visit just became a priority. Grabbing a set of claws before supplies run out is the only way to get them without paying secondary market prices, and even then there's no guarantee stock holds through the weekend.

For everyone watching from home, this is a useful reminder that SDCC exclusives and limited giveaways rarely stay free for long once they hit the open market. The same thing happened recently with Disney Lorcana's special edition launch, which ended with physical altercations over limited stock. Event merch has become its own secondary economy.

Marvel's Wolverine still has plenty of legitimate news to follow before its September 15 release.
