Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler Departs Bungie

Joe Ziegler has left Bungie just four months after Marathon's launch, handing the game director role to Del Chafe III as the studio navigates a turbulent year.

Four months into its life as a live service extraction shooter, Marathon is already on its second game director. Joe Ziegler, who took the helm of the sci-fi shooter in March 2024, announced Friday that he has left Bungie. The departure lands at one of the most uncertain moments in the studio's recent history.

The torch gets passed mid-season

Ziegler confirmed the news himself on X, framing it as a deliberate handoff rather than an abrupt exit. Del Chafe III steps into the game director role, with Julia Nardin continuing as creative director. Ziegler described both as already operating in strong leadership positions, which suggests this wasn't a sudden scramble to fill a vacancy.

Chafe brings serious Bungie credentials to the role. A 15-year veteran of the studio, he worked across both Destiny and Destiny 2 before serving as creative director and assistant game director on Marathon. Nardin joined Bungie in 2019, working as narrative lead and narrative director before moving into the creative director seat. The key here is that neither of these are outside hires or emergency promotions. They have been shaping Marathon from the inside for years.

Ziegler's own statement struck an optimistic tone: "Both of them have been operating in a strong leadership capacity for the team and are ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter with an even better and brighter future." He added that he'll be moving on to "something new, somewhere else" and promised an update on his next move soon.

Ziegler's path to Marathon, and what he leaves behind

Before joining Bungie, Ziegler was the game director of Riot Games' Valorant, one of the most successful tactical shooters of the past decade. He publicly announced his move to Marathon in March 2024, taking over from Christopher Barrett, a Bungie veteran who had reportedly been fired for misconduct. Barrett later filed a $200 million lawsuit against Bungie and Sony, alleging wrongful termination. The two parties recently settled for undisclosed terms.

That context matters. Ziegler inherited a project mid-development that had already gone through a leadership change under difficult circumstances, then guided it to launch in March of this year. That's not nothing.

Marathon is currently in Season 2 (Nightfall). A new roguelite PvE mode called Vault Breaker launches July 21 and runs through August 4, with a full PvE mode planned for Season 3.

The numbers tell a complicated story

Marathon launched on Steam to a peak of 77,358 concurrent players in March. By the past 30 days, that number had dropped to a peak of 12,041. For comparison, Destiny 2 recently peaked at 167,867 players on Steam as players returned to mark the end of that game's content development.

The player count decline is real, but the picture isn't entirely bleak. Sony's CFO Lin Tao noted in May that Marathon holds a Metacritic score of 82 and that over 90% of Steam player reviews are positive, with retention metrics described as strong among core users. Sony recorded an 88.6 billion yen impairment loss against Bungie (which it acquired in 2022 for $3.6 billion), but publicly committed to continuing investment in the game.

The studio has also had a brutal few months beyond Marathon's player numbers. Sony announced layoffs affecting "a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members" shortly after Bungie confirmed it was ending Destiny 2 development. Ziegler's exit is the latest headline in a string of significant changes.

What Chafe and Nardin inherit

The new leadership duo takes over a game that has a committed player base but needs to grow it. The Vault Breaker PvE mode launching July 21 is being positioned as an experimental step toward a full PvE offering in Season 3, which is exactly the kind of content expansion that could pull in players who bounced off the PvPvE extraction format.

Marathon's gunplay and audio design have drawn consistent praise since launch (you can read our in-depth review for the full breakdown), but the extraction shooter format has a notoriously high barrier to entry. Retaining the core audience while broadening appeal is the challenge Chafe and Nardin now own.

For players already in the game and looking to stay competitive through the leadership transition, the best weapons and loadouts guide is a good place to start while the new direction takes shape.
