Sony going disc-free: what it means for PlayStation game prices

Sony plans to stop producing physical PlayStation discs by 2028, and the used-game market that keeps prices low for budget players may not survive the shift.

Sony going disc-free: what it means for PlayStation game prices

If you've ever grabbed a PlayStation 5 game for half price at a used game shop, that window may be closing faster than you think.

Sony has confirmed plans to stop producing physical PlayStation discs by 2028. The headline conversation has centered on ownership rights and game preservation, and those concerns are real. But the more immediate hit for most players is simpler: used discs are currently one of the most reliable ways to pay less for games, and that option disappears with them.

What the price data actually shows

A price comparison across 19 of the current top-selling PlayStation games tells a clear story. For most titles, used physical copies are the cheapest available option for the majority of the year. Not by a small margin, either. The resale market creates a persistent low-price floor that the PlayStation Store rarely matches outside of sale windows.

Here's the thing, though: when the PlayStation Store does run deep discounts, it can undercut even used disc prices. That pattern matters because it suggests digital pricing isn't inherently more expensive, it's just inconsistent. Sale events deliver real value, but between those windows, used discs win on price almost every time.

For a budget-conscious player working through a backlog, that difference is felt every week, not just during seasonal sales.

The resale tier that publishers quietly depend on

The used-game market does something that tends to get overlooked in these conversations. It keeps older titles in circulation at price points that encourage new players to take a chance on them. A game that launched at $70 and sat unsold for two years suddenly becomes interesting at $15 used. That discovery pipeline feeds DLC purchases, sequels, and franchise loyalty.

Remove the disc resale tier, and publishers face a genuine tension. Do they hold firm on digital pricing to protect margins, or do they run deeper and more frequent discounts to fill the gap the used market left behind? The pricing data suggests digital sales can already compete when they happen, but the frequency and depth of those discounts would need to increase significantly to replace what used discs currently provide.

important
Once disc production ends in 2028, there will be no new physical stock entering the used market. Existing disc copies will become increasingly scarce, and prices on second-hand platforms will likely rise rather than fall over time.

Games like Astro Bot, which launched as a premium title and later became a go-to recommendation for new PS5 owners, illustrate exactly why this matters. Physical copies of well-regarded platformer games like that one circulate through the used market for years, introducing players to franchises they might never have tried at full digital price.

The 2028 deadline and what comes next

Sony's 2028 cutoff gives the industry roughly two years to adjust. That's not a lot of runway for players who rely on physical retail, and it's essentially no runway for the structural pricing habits that have built up around disc resale over decades.

What most players miss in this discussion is that the PlayStation Store's sale infrastructure already exists to handle a disc-free world. The question is whether Sony and its publishing partners will treat that infrastructure as a replacement for the used market's pricing pressure, or simply pocket the margin difference.

The optimistic read is that deeper, more frequent digital discounts become the new normal. The realistic read is that pricing tends to stay sticky when competitive pressure is removed. Subscription services like PlayStation Plus may absorb some of that gap, but catalog access through a subscription isn't the same as ownership at a low price point.

For players building out their PS5 libraries between now and 2028, the practical move is straightforward: physical copies of games you want to own are worth buying now while the resale market still functions at scale. After that, the gaming guides and strategies for finding the best digital deals are going to matter a lot more than they do today.
